Modern Angl
After 2 hrs walking along Lyall Bay / Hougton Bay, I managed to find a small handful of bits of driftwood to use, whats the best way to soak a large bit of driftwood(near 3 and a half foot long) when you don't have a bath? HummingBird
You could use your inside bath, just take out the wood when you want to use it (That's what I did )
Modern Angl
we don't have one, only have a shower....
HummingBird
ah right, you could try using a plastic lining inside a drawer or a hole in the back yard lol
jude
Sounds like a problem. Can you get a plastic rubbish bin big enough to take it? Otherwise how about a fishtank   If you can't sink it you might need to tie some lead weights discreetly to it in order to make it stay down. Lucid
I have to go with hummingbirds idea of a plastic liner, I am looking at a tewmpory pond type thing that would work also for soaking driftwood and it is constructing a frame, similiar to the sort around a bath and then lining it with a pond liner or black polythene to create the pond part. No holes, no bath and reasonably easy. B
HummingBird
But then there's always the matter of Tannins.
DiverJohn
OK come on fess up, whoes got a REALLY big pot!! Just had a thought... Go around some of those develpments and see if you can score an offcut of plumbing pipe. picked up about a meter "offcut" of 4" pipe, and if i wanted to i could get an endcap to fit it. That assuming your piece of driftwood is relativly straight
jude
I've got it ............ use Caryl's idea and get a cheap paddling pool from the warehouse. Many of them come with frames that can be dismantled for storage Cheers Jude
Caryl
My paddling pool doesn't have frames either, just straight sides. Would be ideal to soak big bits of driftwood unless your big bit of driftwood is longer than 6ft.
morf
or just find a stream and tie it down - so long as you remember where you put it you should be ok
Gretal
Newbie question Also, for how long and just in normal water? I looked at some at the pet shop, but was $60-odd for one the size I wanted and I thought that abit expensive.
HummingBird
The time it takes all tannins to come out/the wood to sink varies from piece to piece. If you use hot water and baking soda it sinks faster.
livebearer_breeder
Go to somewhere like no name biulding recylers and pick up and old crappy bath for $20 Shae
Wok
better still dig a hole and fill it with water. best way of getting a bath is to go for a drive around the neighbourhood and see if you can score a free one  thats how I got my
Caryl
Just tap water gretal. Different woods take different times to soak. They are soaked to pre remove any tannins that may be in them and turn the water brown (harmless but some think unsightly) and to waterlog the wood so it sinks. Gretal
I'm glad I wasn't naive enough to actually pay for some at the pet shop. Would've been embarassed if I had.
