aquariumbeginner32
So hubby comes home from his mechanic today to tell me our car we just bought 5 months ago needs about $2000 worth of repairs (oil leaks) :an!gry We are now waiting to see if the Autosure warranty covers it. The reason we sold our old car and got a new one was because the old one was constantly breaking down and was costing us too much in repairs. :an!gry  :an!gry
smidey
did you get it inspected or look at it yourself before purchase?
aquariumbeginner32
It was inspected before we got the Autosure warranty yes. We had our mechanic check it out.
aquariumbeginner32
We looked at it also, took it for a test drive... and apparently it was inspected for the car dealership we bought it from. Then we had it inspected by our local mechanic thoroughly also. Apparently the only way they would find these leaks is if they pulled the motor apart and everything. It wasn't something that they would find doing a normal inspection. :an!gry
smidey
internal oil leaks? like the piston rings being worn and the $2000 is for a rebuild?
ryanjury
internal oil leaks? like the piston rings being worn and the $2000 is for a rebuild? Yeah sounds interesting to me too, if it was rings then some wear should have been picked up when you got an inspection done and they did compression tests unless it was a complete and random breakage rather than wear.. Do you have a copy of your inspection that was done?
Ira
Or is it a blown head gasket?
diver21
how bad is the oil leak? if its only a slow one that needs about 50ml of oil a week is it worth just topping it up all the time? Also what oil, is it trans, power steering, engine? could just wipe it clean and put it on trademe... :gigl:
Ismart120
Just quietly, I had an oil repair done on my engine at one point, found out they didn't replace the oil so went back to complain and they miraculously found another $600 worth of oil repairs to do. It didn't exist to a point where it needed anything done so I'd be slightly sceptical, unless you've noticed a change in the way it drives/oil light etc? supasi
Get a quote in writing ( most wont quote a price as it may end up more) but get them to write out what is wrong with it. Then take it to be checked at another reputable mechanic without stating why you want it checked. It may cost you for the inspection but hey whats a $100 inspection if it saves you $1900.00. I am not sure how they can say it is a "leak" and it is going to cost $2000 without actually giving you a proper report. How did they find this leak? Did they do a compression test? Is it a head gasket? does the car blow white smoke? is it sluggish? Take the oil cap off and look inside, does it look like peanut butter? If yes, then its a good chance its a head gasket. Lots of questions, but these questions will help determine what sort of "leak " we are talking about. These days work and money is in short supply. Easy answer is to create work. It happens more often than most think.
aquariumbeginner32
lol it's my husbands car and I don't drive so know NOTHING about cars really. It's all a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me lol Anyway, our Autosure warranty covered it. We only had to pay the excess. I honestly don't know where the oil was coming from but they fixed 2 out of 3 leaks. Apparently one is a very slow leak that doesn't need to be done right now. We almost got charged for the oil too but my husband said he was sure Autosure warrant covers oil too and it does.
