justinnz
Hi Guys, I am looking at getting into seahorses, however I am unsure as to where I can purchase them from, I understand there is a pet shop in Palmerston North, "Wet Pets"? that may have stock. Would anyone happen to know where I can get hold of some seahorses? I am also trying to get a couple snake neck turtles so if anyone knows of a contact there it would be appreciated. Cheers, Justin
cuviceps
Try Tropical Blues in Tirau, Fee had some there yesterday. Dependant on what species you are after!
Midas
Haven't been to Wet Pets in a month or so but they pretty much always have some seahorses in stock. web site: http://www.petsunlimited.co.nz/html/pets_unlimited_and_wet_pets.html
justinnz
Thanks, do you have the contact details for Tropical Blues? Cheers Justin
Caryl
Welcome to the fishroom Justin. Have you researched the requirements needed by seahorses? They are not for beginners. Very hard to feed as they need live food - lots and lots and lots of very small live food.
Caryl
Tropical Blues is owned by fishroom member Fee. Send her a PM or email [email protected]
justinnz
Thanks Caryl, Yes I have, I researched into them a while back however when I went to purchase them I was informed that they were protected and I was unable to buy them. It seems now I was incorrectly informed? Cheers, Justin

Rob
The NZ native seahorses Hippcampus adominalus (spelling?) are also being breed commercially in NZ (these are the type that Fee has available) they grow larger than the Kuda type. Also Kuda types are tropicals, adominalus prefer more temperate conditions.
Pegasus
Hi Justin, Glad you joined the forum, and welcome. There's a number of Seahorse posts here if you missed them, http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=95 I too have visions of setting up for seahorses, but am at the moment being diverted with other fish and projects. As mentioned, you're gonna need lots of brine shrimp, and there's a large hatcher in the Technical area that might suit your needs if you do eventually find what you are looking for. Regards, Bill (Pegasus)

seahorsemad
Hi Guys Sorry to bring the post back up but i have just seen it, the place to buy the new zealand native seahorses (pot bellied) is the seahorse farm in napier. They couriered mine to me for the small charge of $15.00 and only charged me $25.00 per seahorse (what a buy!!!) there address is theseahorsefarm.co.nz. They were really helpful and have some good information on there site. I feed mine frozen mysis shrimp which is about $8.00 at the petshop and when i can visit the local beach to catch small shrimp. They are great to keep but take a huge amount of patience and money when you start up the tank. I regards to the algae, it can be cleaned the same way as you clean a fresh water tank. If you need any help just PM me.

seahorsemad
Sorry guys, no pictures at the moment but i am more than happy to help in any way. If you know someone coming to the conferance in september why dont you wait till then and get them to pick them out the best ones for you. That way you have a huge selection and can get what you want instead of the limited amount some shops have to sell you. better still make the trip and go and pick them out yourself.
