Looking for Discus Fish Doctor

Servitude

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, couple of my discus have a case of cloudy eye/pop eye. seems to be a recurring one because it happened when they are STILL in the quaranteen tank.

Want to know if there is a fish doctor around that can check it out?

Or know where i can leave it with them to cure them etc, i work full time and struggle to monitor them during working hours, and its stressing me out!

Ive been doing regular water changes with treated water so not really sure whats happening.

Ok heres some pics with my phone cam, its pretty bad.

i guess you can have a feel for its width, have noticed his stomach get quite big now.... bit worried, case of dropsy?

As you can see he lost 1 eye due to the infection, i believe to have originated with all the fry eating at him.

Thoughts?

Have put epsom salt in the water, temps are 29-30, daily water changes. Have been in quarantine tank for maybe 1 month, mom seems to have healed so may transition her out. Dad has lost confidence and has stayed quite a dark colour in the corner. Have left the cone there so they can hide behind etc.

It looks like it could be some sort of intestinal blockage

Epsom salts is a good start but if that don't clear it up it can move on to a bacterial infection

Monitoring the parents with the fry is best solution to when to remove parents/fry

There is no hard and fast rule on how long to leave them together

But when the parents start to looked stressed from all the fry grazing on them thats a good time to remove

I hope you resolve it

all the best

Yep, looks pretty bad. One of my pair recently developed one cloudy eye each when they had fry, it's not that uncommon unfortunately. I removed the fry pronto and started treating ithe Stress Coat and salt. Then moved onto salt and Furan 2. This worked well and they are now spawning again.

However, in your males case I think you are well past the Stress Coat and salt stage. I have tried Furan 2 with a discus in the same state as yours (severe pop eye and bloated stomach due to internal infection) but it did not work and the fish died.

I would recommend having a chat to your vet urgently and see if they will prescribe you Baytril, which is a broad spectrum antibiotic that works very well on internal infections.

PM me if you want any more information on dosage/treatment regime for Baytril.

cheers

Thanks for the responses.

Sadly i was monitoring the fry on the parents, and definately did look out for signs of stress, this all happened the night i went to bed (they were fine @ 10pm then next morning they were just trying to escape the fry) next morning it had blown up dramatically. I will get onto Furan as you have mentioned. Do you know which vet can prescribe Baytril? will i need to move the fish as i wouldn't like too due to its state.

Furan can be administered insitu. As for Baytril, the way I have been advised to use it is in a bath. So that requires the fish to be handled twice per day for 7 days. I have used it only three times, but successfully all three times.

I would suggest ringing a local vet and asking for Baytril. You may need to go and meet the vet, and taking those photos in would help. PM me if you want the dosage.

Sounds like some information on this baytril would be good to have so it is probably best posted rather than in private.. Also if there are any credible links that can be printed and taken to vets with info on how to treat fish with it and what it is effective against that can help.. Not many vets will just prescribe something just because you ask for it.

The usual applies, talk to a veterinary expert before using this type of product. PM sent to Servitude.

Here is a link to a site that is readily available on the internet. Scroll through the PDF for information specific to ornamental fish.

Went to the vet, had a good look at discus.

Good news he said it didnt have dropsy, we did a water test and despite water changes the results weren't good at all. He prescribed 20ml Baythril 4ml for 5 days @ 50% water change in a 25L QT.

Its been 1 day, and its made some huge results which is great, more colour and fish seem a little more active. Will report back on more progress.

Went to Lynfield Vet on Whiteswan road.

Fantastic service, and good expertise. Fish is looking much better. Will update tonight when i do a water change.

Thanks :hail: It is always handy to know where a vet that has knowledge with fish is on the off chance you need it. From looking at that fish I would say there is no saving it so it would be awesome if you do manage to treat it!

Ok now has been 2 days of treatment,

fish seem more lively (treating two of them) and majority of the time they are upright.

did notice that some of the skin seems to be coming off the dad? flaky white patches? not sure if thats good. have definately noticed a reduction in the swelling of the eye.

Thoughts?

Ok have finished the treatment, and it hasnt cured the discus, prognosis isn't good. Fish seems more active and normal but its physical appearance is not pleasing at all... Scales have been lost and doesn't seem to be getting replaced.

I am considering euthanising it... should i? is the fish in pain? I feel for it and dont want it to live a painful life.

This guy has the biggest heart, he has survived well and put some much effort and taken a lot of hits, he is such a fighter.

Hey Servitude, sorry to hear that he has not improved sufficiently. I had hoped the Baytril would do the trick, maybe it is too far advanced. To be honest, if his appearance is worse than a week ago, I'm amazed he is still alive.

It's up to you, only you know what to do with him now.
