Duke
I have small bubbles in my tank are these good or not ? I have heard that this is not ideal so I thought I would ask the question. I'm guessing that they are from water turbilance. Thanks
Brianemone
i cant stand bubbles, i get some now and again from the skimmer and powerheads drawing air down in the current. i dont think they are "bad" but they will make salt build up out of the tank (on the cross brace's or hood)
cracker
Nothing wrong with good aeration. As Brian said can make for good salt creep. Usually this occurs when falling or trickling water is entering too close to main pump intake. Try moving pump or breaking fall of incoming water with sponge or something. Small bubbles is good if anything, there is shitloads on a natural reef whan waves break etc.
chimera
microbubbles are only bad if they are around your return pump (or entering back into the display tank from the return is a bad sign) as it degrades the performance of your pump and cause cavitation thus shortening its lifespan. other than that, just aesthetic reasons in the display tank
Ira
I kinda like the look of a few small bubbles drifting around the tank.
Pies
as it degrades the performance of your pump and cause cavitation thus shortening its lifespan ? Cavitation is caused by a pump pushing more water than its sucking, thus creating a pocket (vaccum) of bubbles. Shortens your lifespan? Micro bubbles are mostly aesthetic. If they are excessive than can reduce the power of lighting as light reflects back of the top of the bubbles and doesn't get into the tank. chimera
Ok then badly explained, let me put it this way - small bubbles coming out your return into the main tank can be a sign of cavitation around your return pump. Inefficient low-pressure pockets on the impeller form bubbles that collapse against the blades resulting in premature wear. So, if the bubbles are COMING FROM your return, then it MAY mean you are experiencing cavitation from your return pump which is bad. Or for an definition better than I can explain, read here! http://www.mcnallyinstitute.com/01-html/1-3.html
cracker
Thats only if there is no turbulance with incoming falling/crashing water.
