The main reason I'm attracted to this substrate is that you don't need to layer it underneath gravel. I need something like this as I'm flatting at the moment and the house is for sale so I will probably be moving the tank within 6 months... I've been wondering if you could get some iron-rich clay and add a few macros, mash it through a mesh to make appropriately sized particles, then fire it in a kiln? Some guy in South Africa reckons you can bake it in an oven at 100 C for a couple of hours - he's made something similar.
