wellmax
SHOULD WE BE USING CARBON IN OUR FILTERS PERMANENTLY OR ONLY OCCASIONALLY. ALSO DOES CARBON REMOVE CHEMICAL NUTRIENTS FROM THE WATER COLUMN. KIND REGARDS JOHN MC

alanmin4304
Carbon will take a lot of solubles out of the water but has a habit of getting overloaded and dumping them all back out. Good to remove dyes or meds but I haven't used it in years.
GZ_Loach
GOOD STUFF TO USE BUT YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT EVERY SO OFTEN, ALSO NOT GOOD TO USE WITH A PLANTED TANK AS IT REMOVES FERTS FROM THE WATER OOPS I left caps lock on
ally07
Agree with Alan and GZ, carbon should not be a staple in your filtration system. Use it only to remove medications/ chemicals and then throw it away. I've read that having carbon in the filtration all the time as also been linked to hole-in-the-head disease in cichlids, so it can't be a good thing for other fish as well. If you're worried about filter media surface area, ceramic noodles/ bio balls are much safer and have much more surface area than carbon. IHBR
If your after something that does the same job as carbon but without the negative side effects, use seachems 'Purigen'. Not cheap like carbon, but lasts up to 6 months and can be recharged.
Ira
If your after something that does the same job as carbon but without the negative side effects... You mean like a water change? Cheaper than carbon, lasts a week or two.
