Caryl
When I set up my 4ft African tank, I cycled it with 4 medium sized goldfish. When the Africans were added the goldfish went outside into a bath. This morning I was outside photographing dragonflies in the barb pond (no sign of fry there but I think they would be too small to see and well hidden in the plants) when I noticed some goldfish fry in the bath. Never thought they would breed as there is little plant in there (and no flat leaves) for the fish to spawn under. The 4 big goldfish are all orange so the fry should eventually change too I hope. The fry are about 1.5cm
Caryl
Hmm wonder if I should catch them and put them in something else - the barb pond perhaps?
HummingBird
Looks like that tub could use a plecostomus or two Great to hear they're breeding though.
Caryl
The fry can hide in the green water and feed off it. It is that green because hedgehogs keep dying in it and polluting it before I spot them, lift them out with the garden leaf rake, then biff them over the fence into the reserve next door
Lucid
lol Caryl Awesome that you have the goldfish fry, lets hope the barbs peek on the neighbours and catch the hint. B
Jo1
Hey Caryl, We go to a goldfish farm quite regularly and the owners remove the fry (or the parents could be moved). Otherwise all the fry will be eaten. Witness this feast regularly in our pond.
Caryl
Yes I know. Not worried though as they only have a bath to live in. One day I will build the pond (been saying that for 20 years)
Wok
Nice bathtub Caryl. I have 5 similar looking ones with fish in them. It is so easy to breed fish when you don't intentionaly mean to. Take the adults out and put them in another tub or the fry will be eaten (speaking from experience here) have fun.
Caryl
They haven't been eaten so far so I will leave them and see how they go. Not worried if they don't survive anyway. Most surprised there was fry to start with!!
plecs
i would think that at 1.5cm the fry are getting past the being eaten by the parents stage! silly hedgehogs! good news caryl! and as said lets hope the barbs catch on! plecs
