Too much substrate fertilizer?

I wouldn't have thought so, as long as it can't enter the water column (which is why we put sand on top of daltons etc.), the nutrients should be available only to any roots that grow into the substrate deep enough to use them.

The only thing to note is that by adding more 'dirt' you're reducing the amount of water in the tank but you knew that.

I have an Amazon sword in there already but Im going to change it up soon and add a few crypts and stem plants.

Ive only have diy co2 so I figured balancing the ferts in the water column with the light and co2 would be too much of a pain, but if at least the fertilizers are all in the substrate it will only be the co2 and lights that need to be balanced

The deeper the substrate the deeper the plants will send roots down. If you decide to pull up the plants it will leave you with a huge mess.

I have about an inch of Aquatic mix with about 1-2 inches of sand on top.
