bobo
Hi guys, I have an office next year (yay!), so I want to have a small tank in it. I want it to be low maintenance (so no stem plants). The tank will hopefully be 20-30L. It will have a Siamese Fighter as its occupant - I'm not sure if I will put anything else in with him. I was thinking of two ideas: 1) Put 20W of light over it, dose with Excel (I figured it would be cheap on a tank this size) and grow glosso. Would this work? Would it be low maint after the initial set up? 2) Get one of those self contained tanks with a modicum of light, and plant some swords or crypts. Thoughts? Cheers
DennisP
Swords, driftwood, tetra. Problem solved.
alanco
congrats for getting your own office! sounds like you have a good plan!   you should try and create a little landscape in your aquarium something like this found on this website (check it out) -http://www.aquascapingworld.com/magazine/Magazine/Interview-with-Pedro-Pinto.html an idea you could have a fresh water shrimp thank too  its something a little different- and that would go nicely with your Siamese fighter and they are great for attacking algae that may grow on your glossys, so they are not only great additions to your nano tank they help keep your tank low maintenance btw have a few shrimps if your interested in getting them off me just pm me or something :bounce: :bounce:
dreams
I reckon a crypt tank is easier to maintain. Low light = slower growth, less algae fluctuations etc But a glosso tank would look awesome will take more juggling of parameters to get it right though
Insect Direct
i like the tank on this page http://www.aquascapingworld.com/forum/g ... scape.html

dreams
What kind of moss do you guys think they're using on the tree?
pixiedust
I adore that little bonsai tank - looks like it would take a lot of patience to create though! It's Taiwan Moss "Taxiphyllum alternans" used on the tree - found the original post in the link below: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... manso.html
hovmoller
And here is how it's done:
Insect Direct
cool, where did you find that breakdown of it? java and xmas moss look similar to whats used above if grown in good conditions.
hovmoller
From a norwegian site that sells aquarium stuff online.. (can't remember where but I had the pic on my computer) It was listed under Java Moss which I don't believe it is... Edit: Try google image this: javamose_akvarie_1
bobo
Cheers for the replies. Yeah - I love the tank/concept - but am too lazy to aquascape like that. I just got a free tank. Rectangular, a little over a foot long. ~20L. I was thinking of a glosso carpet, with maybe one feature plant, and/or rock features. 16W T8 6500K Lights. Dosing with Flourish and Excel. Base - Flourite? Sand? Sound like it will work? Again, thanks for the feedback
SamH
I'd definitely do a glosso carpet with an "island" of rocks slightly off centre with a nice Java Fern growing from it. Fluorite for the base if you can afford it.
bobo
Yeah Sam, that was something along the lines of what I was thinking. How do I get a heater to fit a short tank (I think it's 23cm). I thought I could get a 25W submersible, and run it horizontally. Can you run all submersible heaters horizontally? phoenix44
Think of a tank that is easy to maintain! Realistically you'd only want a tank that you can leave and not do WCs on for extended periods. Any high light plant is a PITA as youll need to offset the light with nutrients and CO2. A small tank with only a simple light and loads of java fern will also look quite appealing.

I could stick 8w of T8 light over the tank and grow java, or crypts, or swords - does that sound easier? Maybe with a sand substrate? No dosing? Any thoughts on the heater? Can all submersibles be run horizontally? Cheers
bobo
Just got permission from the wife to be to buy a Fluval Edge, cos they look cool. Anyone know much about these - I assume the lighting will be good enough to grow some low light plants?
phoenix44
Java fern + crypts. you can upgrade the lights and buy the LEDs off ebay.
SamH
I run my Aquaones anyway I please  Found the 25W to be a bit under powered to be honest, I'd be more inclined to go for the 55W.
burrowssj
how about something like this always wanted to do something similar with a frog setup but never got around to it
bobo
Hmmm I can't really be bothered mucking around, changing the light system. So, if the defacto lights aren't up to growing some crypts, java ferns, etc, I think I'll go for the regular tank rather then the 'Edge'. It just looks so slick
phoenix44
Those are fine for the standard lights.
bobo
Hmmmmm Sorry to pester: 1) Will the dark corners cause issues? I want to have pretty full coverage. 2) Will I be able to put the lights on a timer? Pretty essential tbh. 3) I heard the lights heat the water up, will this be an issue? Cheers
