henward
that pic is a red hook metynnis, all closely related to piranha... Or shall i say piranha is closely related to those:D i have a red hook metynnis thats just under a foot long. spotted metynis readily available now is also part of that family right? that auction is not at all a piranha. but, interesting. i have seen and had silver dollars mishapen like that in the past, when i have purchased them as adults. sometimse their head seems to differ. colouration too. some have more reds than others
Disco Dan
Piranha are on MAF's list of restricted species - you will not find any in NZ since they pose a hazard to native fish if released into NZ waters.
henward
yes that is correct. apparently, maf inpects the piranhas almost everyday in the public aquariums to ensure they are stil there and not being bred
