gagaforfish
Not long after i got my tank i noticed a small snail (like 2-3mm long) in there, i was going to scoop it out but forgot... Then I was away for a week and when i got back i found another 2-3 small ones and a couple of larger ones??? I removed as many as I could and they are now in a plastic container... But I am kind of concerned about how they got in there in the first place... Tank+Filter+Ornaments were second hand, and hadn't been used for a year before i got them Heater+ Stones were new (i bought them) Could they have came with my plants? (randoms from animates) Also what the heck am i supposed to do with the snails? I don't want them in my tank... Help??
Ira
Could they have came with my plants? (randoms from animates) Could they have? Hahahaha, Yes. Have you never looked at an animates plant tank? They're always crawling with snails.
BikBok
most definitley they came with the plants. I got some recently, I even dipped the leaves of the plant in a weak bleach solution and then ran it under running water. But STILL managed to find snails in the tank after putting the plant into a bare bottomed tank with no snails previously. I now have some little baby ramshorns and a snail that looks like a little pond snail that hatched from eggs in jelly that i later found. My plan is always to soak them in a bucket of snail rid over night, then give them a good rinse before putting in the tank.

John Rimbauer
I have 4 different types of snails in my big tank, I enjoy watching them potter around. Seriously, they do a good job cleaning up old dying leaves and any uneaten food. They establish a balance in the tank, and as long as I don't overfeed they don't breed up to big numbers. Many of the fish - rams, gourami, and flying foxes - seem to enjoy eating the baby snails, and are quite adept at deshelling them. Most types seem quite sensitive to copper. If you want to knock them out, that's an easy way to do it. Copper sulphate salts in a bath would probably kill tiny snails and eggs. Trumpet snails seem especially sensitive, I've had them curl up in a 100L tank from putting to much trace element fertiliser in.
