phoenix44
Is any one on here a carpet repairer? or knows about carpet repairs, mainly with matching colours and cutting and posting new layers of carpets in?
lmsmith
We needed carpet repaired and looked in the phone book and just called a few. We choose the one who had been doing it the longest. We got a piece of carpet replaced about 30cm x 15cm. It cost $120, but we provided a mat to cut up. The guy who did it did a great job, it took about 1/2hr. He said the biggest issue with the replacements is colour matching in terms of the same amount of wear. Don't know if that's helpful or not. ryanjury
Yeah I would just do a call around and see what people are going to charge, and also how experienced they sound a few popped up when I let my fingers do the walking before that are reputable names for carpet locally.. phoenix44
the section is 4ft x 2ft I am actually worrying myself sick because i don't like ruining someone-else's property.
ryanjury
If you are responsible enough to worry and pay good money to have it repaired then you are probably better than most tenants people will find.

lmsmith
We felt terrible too - maybe if I tell you my stupid story, you'll feel a bit better! I had a candle lit and blew it out before I went to bed. Before the wax set, I picked it up to move it, and the wax spilt on the carpet. It was about a 5cm x 5cm square. We couldn't get the wax out with scrubbing or anything, so I got wax paper and the iron. Turns out the iron was too hot and I melted the plastic carpet - it's way bigger than the original bit I spilt and no amount of scrubbing would help! We had about 4 or 5 mats to choose the bit from, which was good. How old is the carpet in the place? If it's relatively new or popular, it should be easier to get replacement stuff. Definitely get a couple of people out to have a look at it. Did you just move the tank, or are you moving soon? How long before you move if you're moving? lmsmith
Have you told the landlord? It's possible their insurance covers it. We didn't tell ours, once we got it fixed, I just cleaned the whole area with carpet cleaner and kind of roughed up the edges and you can't see it any more. phoenix44
Yeah I told her. she came over to see it today. she has home-owners insurance, but then the insurance company will recover the costs from me. Ill call my insurance company tomorrow, but if the cost of repair is lower than the excess ill jsut get it fixed. At the moment im just hoping it can get fixed. lmsmith
Sounds silly, but you've tried steam cleaning? I bet it won't get it all out, but it could help so the piece that needs to be replaced is smaller.

I would get a quote and then get your insurance to cover it. If you are with AA they will pay to get it fixed

smidey
on the flip side this points out the benefits of the feet of a stand. i would say the biggest problem you'll have is matching the colour, good luck.
lmsmith
How did it happen? Did you try to dry it? How long was it wet for? Is the bottom completely enclosed? I'm starting to freak out now because I'm moving my 5' tank in a week or so and we've had a couple of floods.
phoenix44
water dripped down the rear wall off the tank from where the background was and soaked the stand and carpet. I don't know how long it was like that for, but I only noticed when i saw the stand splitting from the sides. I ran a dehumidifier and its totally dry now. The bottom was completely enclosed. Worst design ever. Nice looking stand, terrible design, wrong material. like making baby toys out of gunpowder and glass.
Ira
I'm hoping to move one of my tanks soon...I expect it to be a bit nasty.
Adrienne
Did your landlord say she had any spare pieces of the carpet? Normally carpet layers can patch it in without it being able to be noticed.
phoenix44
yeah, she is going to have a look. I have a walk in wardrobe, so worst case scenario ill ask if i can get a piece of carpet from there, and replace the piece in the wardrobe with a good match. Yes, when I get around to moving my 5ft (about 18 months time) I hate to think what the carpet will look like  Have had at least 8 spills - some pretty large. phoenix44
what great news! It should be $250 or under to repair perfectly. They will replace an entire section and take it to the door.
