Josh_S
Just a quick question for the experienced African breeders out there. Last week i stripped the fry of two small dems from my tank, one of which only had one bubba (which looks very much like a dem) and the other had a few fry but these look more like the electric yellows. Is it possible for these two breeds to get busy? I haven't found much info on the net.
diver21
could the dem stole the eggs from the yellow and raised them as her own? only stabing into the dark here
phoenix44
Genetically unlikely for a Labidochromis to cross with a Pseudotropheus. I've had them together and they bred like rats - only within the same species. Baby yellows are noticeably yellow and dems have bands on them. I'll see if i can find any of my pics. Josh_S
Yep definitely have 1 confirmed dem the same as your pic. Others still a mystery... look kinda like the GAEs in my tank I will try to get some pics up later to day.

phoenix44
post a pic. were your parent yellows clean? That means they did not have bars on them (usually black or grey); no wash out in the colour. yellows are supposed to be (in the trade any how) bright yellow with the black band on the fins. no other colours at all. newly hatched yellow - (you normally wont see them this small, as they are in the mouth) Good yellows - Smidey on here, also has some beautiful yellows (or had). Occasionally juvi yellows will have some faint bars on them, but normally they are clean. depends on what the parents are like.
ryanjury
Demasoni and yellows can cross breed, it is unlikely due to them being completely different genus but it has happened before, same with yellows and red zebras.. I stripped a mouth full of demasoni the other day and got a heap of radoms out of her mouth, they are kept with brown haps, empresses, peacocks the babies I stripped like like red empress babies. I fed them out anyway as you just don't know what they are but I suspect the female demasoni picked up and raised another fishes babies. smidey
i have had females holding pick up another species eggs that were spat which i think is more likely in this situation. I even a red zebra that was holding eggs for just 2 days pick up a few free swimming baenschi fry which died as they couldn't get out to feed. as for the barring, even my "clean" ones showed faint barring at times but maybe i misunderstand the definition of baring. mine were never overly dark, it more looked like scales running in a different direction. The yellows are all from good breeders in Auckland 4 from maaxim (i think) and 6 from Kennith (kttk?). PS. Just noticed a yellow holding!! :bounce:
phoenix44
Pretty much all of my fish were from Kenneth Doesn't get any better than that in my opinion!

At times my yellows have a slightly darker looking line running down their side horizontally. But it comes and goes Gah these are only my second lot of fry gunna be sad if i have to "dispose" of the poor little buggers. If they were only picked up by her they may not be hybids right. What are the chances of this? should i grow them out and see?
phoenix44
Grow them out and see. I think it is highly unlikely that dems and yellows have cross bred.
Josh_S
Looking at the photos i just took its pretty obvious to me now that shes picked up a few GBA eggs. Anyhoo got 6 dem fry and a bristlenose yay! :bounce: :bounce:
