Sophia
how does it work with having no filter? Is it essentially a heated tank-pond? Do you have an air stone or such like for oxygen? Excuse the silly questions but I am really interested and I like how your tank looks

Deepsound
how does it work with having no filter? Is it essentially a heated tank-pond? Do you have an air stone or such like for oxygen? Excuse the silly questions but I am really interested and I like how your tank looks Hi Sophia, Thank you ! There is no silly question I don't have any air stone, just a stream pump (sometimes, some species don't like any stream). Oxygen comes from plants. I set my nano tanks up trying to follow a kind of natural way. But fishes and shrimps like these are not big polluters. And I got another tanks with filters. So, how do I proceed ? Soil (bacterium in it) and plants help to filter the water (ones which grow fast and floating plants). A stream pump move the water, avoiding dead zones, and let the nutriments get to the plants. When the tank is mature, (after about 6 months), it's possible not to have water changes during a pretty long period. Before this, I do water changes of about 5 or 10% weekly (it depends on the species). We use nearly the same method in DSB or Jaubert marine tanks. During summer, I put my fishes in container as well (80, 200, 300 liters), with pouzzolane and a lot of floating plants. I prepare it in february (sorry but i live in France. I duknow which month is the end of winter in nz  The temperature has to be about 10°C). Micro fauna, mosquito larvas and a lot of worms can prosperate and then, during summer, my fishes eat only alive foods. Last year, some of my fishes stay from june to october in the containers. I didn't feed them, didn't make any water change (just rain) and there was no filter, no pump, no heater. And some of them breed, like pseudomugil furcata. I try to find photos I took if you're interested. If I'm not clear, feel free to ask me. First time i explain it in english

Barrie
Beautiful... I wish I could have austrolebia nigripinnis and some nothobranchius. And the beautiful fundulopanchax amieti too. Ameiti have only just arrived here (From Germany) but Nothos seem to be around, just not too many people breed them. To me they (all peat spawners) are the most exciting

Deepsound
And no we don't have those shrimps here So sad... There are so beautiful species and they are really useful to emulate a kind of ecosystem in a tank. You just don't have any shrimps in pet shop or it's not allowed 'cause of biosecurity ?
