Aquila
I wouldn't buy discus from a petstore as the first choice...you can get them cheaper and healthier directly from breeders. There are several really good ones based in Auckland. It depends on individual compatibility but you can keep as little as 2, but 6 is recommended as an ideal in case their is some aggression. How big is your tank? I would say that most places in nz have tap water close to pH 7 and would be fine without any discus buffer. As long as you can keep the pH stable, that is the important thing. phoenix44
I actually will say that the recent batches of discus from the wholesalers are absolutely brilliant, so cudos to them for that! If you see any golden sunrises, or hifin blue diamonds, snap them up cause they really are very nice. how big is your tank and what do you have in it? tbunting
hi thanks for all of the advice i have today gone out and brought 2 blu turqs and 1 blue cobolt from holly wood fish farm in albany in maybe a couple of months will keep my eye out for some other very nice looking discus will try and post pics soon my tank is 450l 4ft
firenzenz
Keep an eye on that mix. Turqs can be moody little beggars and one Cobalt may get picked on. discus are funny like that. Triangles aren't necessarily good for them. As said above go for a pair or go for 5-6. That may change of course depending on sex. Rule of thumb was 1 discus per 50 ltrs, but maybe less as your tank has lots of water for that length, so if One of those three gets picked on I'd be looking to get more in there asap. Haven't been into Pupuke Aquarium(Pupuke rd) for quite a while, but worth a look as he used to have Rons discus.
Adrienne
IMO a minimum of 4 discus will be needed and you can easily get away with 6 in a tank that size. How big are the discus you purchased and what type of tank set up are you putting them in i.e. planted or bare bottom. What else is in the tank. N1CK
I would get another one, if 2 of them do pair up, the other one will get picked on

phoenix44
how long dose for them to pair up depends on what you dose them with and for how long
firenzenz
how long dose for them to pair up Depends on their age, but even a young pair will team up almost the moment they are put in the same tank. look for a pair to start housekeeping- tending to potential laying site. Swimming toward and bowing to each other.
