Sweetysmum
Hi guys, Calypso my BD's temperature is getting really high. I have all heating off now except his UVB and basking lights. The room he is in gets very warm over the summer because of the way the sun hits it in the afternoon. He is not right by a window but because the room is very small, he isn't far away. I have drapes across one side but that doesnt help with the heat in the slightest. There is a large fish tank beside him, so this also adds to the heat. There is no way I can put hiim in another room either. I had two thoughts, getting a ceiling fan put in or getting something put on the windows to give them a tint to help stop the heat. I would appreciate your thoughts on either of these ideas, or if anyone elso has any ideas they can offer. These last few days his cool side has crept up to about 35oC because of this outside heat. Thanks.
alanmin4304
If it cools down at night it will probably be OK.
Insect Direct
more vents, lower wattage basking bulb and or maybe even a thermostat wired to it. if room gets too hot though then none of the above will do much. if eyes appear sunken in give shallow warm bath imediately. as likely dehydrated. Over 45C for to long is not good. 40 is a good basking temp to aim for, that gives a little room for the hot days. (if using a thermostat then temps should be constant unless the room gets over 40C ) by that time the bds boucning of the walls doing cartwheels
Sweetysmum
Hey Matt, my thermostat was connected to the day and night heat but i have had these both turned off now for about a week when the temp started rising so now there is no thermostat working in his enclosure. Terrarium is glass so cant get any vents in the side which is what i think it really needs. I am making sure he keeps his water intake up by giving him drops of water throughout the day but will keep an eye on his eye to make sure it looks ok and not sunken in. Hey Mystic shifting the lights on top of the lid would be a good idea except it is a wooden lid. :-? What does Malins dimmer do, does it work like a thermostat. Westmike
Can you build something outside??
Insect Direct
if it has glass doors, another possibility is to get them cut down and put in a mesh vent along the top, shouldnt be too hard to do.
