bobo
hey guys, I'm looking to buy a 120x30x30 tank; will it need some form of bracing? Or can I fill it up? Cheers BoBo
SamH
A bit vague there Bobo :-? Is the tank new, used or about to be built? What thickness is the glass? If you get the glass thick enough, it won't need bracing. Perhaps ask Barrie or the tank manufacturer. HTH
bobo
Sorry... Not sure about the thickness of the glass - I'm looking to buy one of the tanks they have out the back of the bird barn (in the pond seection). I can go measure the thickness. What would you say is safe? Off to bed now, so won't respond until tomorrow. Thanks for the reply Sam
Dixon1990
If its only 30cm high, i would have thought 5-6 mm should be enough.
Barrie
if its 300 height, 6mm is OK but yes it should have a brace
bobo
Thanks for the replies. Where do you get a brace/bracing material from? Cheers edit: I might be under a misapprehension here (again...)- I thought bracing was something you stuck around the fish tank, i.e. like the black base that goes around my current one. However, can it be pieces of glass running across the top of the aquarium; i.e. at each end and the middle? In which case the tank may already have it. Neon
hi there, yes bracing is the glass on top of the tank, at the ends and in the middle. I'd imagine the bird barn tanks would have bracing.
bobo
<----------- dumb. Cheers Neon
phoenix44
If you want to go rimless, use 8mm / 10mm for the base, and ask the glazier to support the walls of the tank with glass supports from the base. they will / should know what to do. Overseas you get 5ft x 1.5-2ft x 1.5-2ft high rimless tanks that look stunning but they cost a bomb.
Morcs
Was just at bird barn. That tank looks cool in that size should be fine without bracing. Its 6mm
phoenix44
Sorry... Not sure about the thickness of the glass - I'm looking to buy one of the tanks they have out the back of the bird barn (in the pond seection). sorry, didn't read that it was a shop that was selling it. A reputable place like that will sell tanks with glass sizes they know are safe / work; so you should be ok buying it straight from them. bobo
I've actually decided to get it custom made due to the fact I want to fit it to some specific dimensions. Does it matter if the 4ft lighting I bug overhangs at each end by a couple of cm? I can't imagine it does - just checking. This is to start a planted aquarium - 80w of light sound good for c120litres? 116cm long by 26cm deep by 40cm high. Or should I shoot for 120w of light? Cheers for all the help BoBo

bobo
normal ligt or high output light? always get more if you can. Was looking at those Aqua One T8 units - so I assume they are 'normal'. Cheers Phoenix
