lambo
Hi, What options are out there for use as a floating plant? Duckweed and riccia just get sucked into the filter so they're no good. My discus seem to like it under the sag I have floating but thats going to a new home and I'd love to replace it with something. Any hints or ideas? Cheers
phoenix44
Indian Fern FTW. you can also plant it in the ground and it is one of the nicest plants around. it is delicate, but im sure it will be ok in your tank if it thrived im mine. Caryl
My red rotala grows long and spreads out over the surface.
alanmin4304
Some of the stem plants like Caryl has might be OK if allowed to grow to the surface and float. Ambulia and cabomba, or Cardamine lyrata. Depending on the size of the tank Echinodorus uraguayensis---will grow to about 700mm and has long leaves a bit like giant vallisneria. Caryl
Sorry, yes I did mean they were planted but grow long enough for the ends to float.
Nymox
Looked everywhere for some indian fern today with no luck, anyone got any?
lambo
Thanks for the ideas. I'm probably veering more towards the indian fern or maybe the echinodorus uraguayensis. Will have to keep my eyes peeled and try to find some.
Caryl
Indian fern is Ceratopteris pteroides/cornata. It is often confused with water sprite, Ceratopteris thalictroides . Both propagates by plantlets forming on the leaf margins. Another similar plant is water wisteria, Hygrophila difformis . H difformis propagates from cuttings. Its emersed form is a lot different from its submerged form. All three ought to be readily available.
