Air pumps dont really create current, other than a bit of surface current.

And get a small airpump, something like the aquaone SR2500 makes a nice amount of bubbles with bubble wand but not too high a output.

If they dont like it, just remove it. Luckily they are quite cheap devices and make great backups for when filters fail.

You pump enough air in and they do make a LOT of current. But it's usually a fairly slow diffuse current. I had a tall tank with a big airpump on it once that seemed to get the water moving more than a 1000lph powerhead.
