suphew Posted September 10, 2009 Report Share Posted September 10, 2009 The warehouse sells cheap mowers with B&S motors, they sometimes have $100 off which brings them down to about $350. The rest of them is pretty tinny but the motors are good. Another place to look is auction rooms, I always buy my mowers secondhand, typically they are from estate sales and work fine. Nymox Posted September 13, 2009 Report Share Posted September 13, 2009 I dont know what aucklands dumps are like but usually If i need a mower, chainsaw or linetrimmer or something I head to a dump to the recycling section and bring a few home, doesnt take much to get them going usually just seized, an overhaul sorts that and mower motors are very easy to figure out. Specially B&S. Ive got 3 mowers at the moment I got working for under $40 the lot, I do havea lot of parts kicking around the house tho. I also seen an episode of mythbusters which lead to rip apart my flymo in an attempt to make a personal hovercraft lol, needless to say once the alcohol wore off the idea didnt seem so appealing. Wok Posted September 13, 2009 Report Share Posted September 13, 2009 If you have quite steep or hilly sections you need to mow, then 2 stroke motors are the way to go. We also have a Honda handmower, meant to be an Easy Start, well, have had nothing but problems with it from Day 1, absolute piece of rubbish, very strongly advise you dont get one if these. smidey Posted September 14, 2009 Report Share Posted September 14, 2009 there are two names that my grandfather who was a farmer & my father who is a contractor use for small-engine powered equipment, "STIHL" & "Briggs & Stratton". I own equipment made by both & i am pleased every time i use them as they start easily & always run well. The other thing thats great about these products apart from their reliability is they are also well priced for top quality gear. My last purchase was a STIHL weed eater, i chose the model with ergo start & a bit more power which was an extra $60 but i could've spent $320 on the same one without the extras. The equivalent (similar size engine & attachments etc) at Mitre10 in a "no-name brand" was only $40 less than the STIHL, it really is worth checking out the specialist stores before purchasing from a box store. The stihl shop serviced & tuned it for free after 10 hours use & they recommend servicing once a year with regular use, i wonder what would happen if you took a weed eater into Mitre10 for a service, do they do that? You can always buy something cheap but for things like this it does pay in the long run to spend a bit more as the chances of it still being a reliable machine in 10 years will be alot higher than a cheap one.
