SamH
I'd imagine that the above would be easier than importing fish, yes? Has anyone ever done this? Thanks
alanmin4304
Most who have done it no longer do and it is not hard to work out why.
SamH
MAF? I just can't seem to find any of the plants I really want.
alanmin4304
Shops don't pay much for plants and few people are interested in them. Most people are happy to buy some and replace them when they die. There would be few shops around here that could name the plants they sell. You would make more mone cleaning toilets. phoenix44
yeah. there are a lot of issues with importing plants. apart from IDing them and stuff. most plants are purchased cheaply so that they can be sold at $2each. the more expensive plants tend not to sell, or appeal to only a few people so its not really profitable to get them in. still if there is something you want or like speak to who ever orders the plants in at your LFS and ask them if they know if a certain plant is on the list. most wholesalers are pretty good at selling the right plant, but more often than not - they are grown emersed. SamH
So if the plant I order IS grown emersed, what do I have to do to stop it dying?
phoenix44
give it time and it will start growing submersed leaves. good light. nutrient - plant basics.
SamH
I'll ask next time at Animates or HFF. Maybe I could ask HFF through here?

Hutt Pets down here seem to have a bit of knowledge about plants and have the all named with their common and scientific name (although plants down here are really expensive now :-? )

twinkles
$5 or near that for glosso $6 for hair grass Mosses are around the $5 mark is that pretty close to what hff is charging you? It sounds like good prices, i really want to get some to try in our pond in summer.
SamH
Not sure yet, they haven't given my prices.
alanmin4304
The people down here who are growing the plants get about $1 / bunch for stem plants so that is why most are grown emersed. YOU CAN BUY PLANTS THAT ARE GROWN EMERSED BUT NEED VERY STRONG LIGHT OR WILL NOT SURVIVE SUBMERSED SO YOU NEED TO CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS WELL. SamH
Hemianthus callitrichoides. I read a thread from 2007 that said it wasn't here. Any change on that? Would Glosso be a suitable substitute? Do I have enough light for Glosso? Thanks (19 more posts till 5 stars... :bounce: )
