Ysolla
One of my Red Honey Gourami is behaving a wee bit...oddly. Has anyone encountered anything like this/know what it's about? Basically, its spending a lot of time chillaxing on a leaf. Breathing is normal, eyes move normally, all that jazz. It just spends a heap of time resting its sternum on a leaf and generally hanging about. It's looking a bit round, but nothing to suggest its so fat it can climb the stairs, or something to that effect. The other one is looking its normal svelte self - and it eats more than the round one. They aren't in a breeding situation, nor have I seen any mating behaviour or bubble nests, though my water has a pretty high current so they may not be able to build one, even if they did try. Hmmm, the Pearls are looking a bit round too... I'm new to fish, so it may be nothing, but better to know that than not. Weird fish.
diver21
might just be that the current is to much for the wee guy and hes just having a break where the waters shelted
Ysolla
Hmm, could be. Though noone else has a problem, but none of them are as round as him either. Will watch and see. Thanks!
LYNDYLOO
Is it Male or Female??
Ysolla
It's too little to tell, but I'd hazard a guess at male.
Aquila
I wouldn't get worried just yet. I think that gouramis tend to be quite slow fish in general. Many of the ones I used to have would stay in one spot most of the time and only swim around the tank occasionally. Keep an eye on his roundness. Ysolla
Actually, I hate to admit it but I think he has dropsy.
LYNDYLOO
How advanced do you think the Dropsy is?? You could try a course of Furan2 :-?
Ysolla
He's in a separate tank and I'm off to get meds today. I've never come across dropsy before, but he looks fairly pinecone-ey so I won't hold my breath. Gotta try though!
nycnlo
hmmm sounds dropsy... generally once it obvious it is dropsy prob not worth the effort.. the meds will prob prolong the death but dont think it will stop it. if its only just showing furan might put it into remission but that fish will always have (kidney problems) dropsy and eventually it will take its toll. i just uthanised a ct last nite that i thought had gone into remission only to have it flare up worse good luck tho yours mite be different
Aquila
Maybe you can post a pic of him? It might not be dropsy. Maybe he's constipated? I would hate for you to lose him because of a misdiagnosis

nycnlo
hmmmm yeah ive just confirmed my honey dwarf gourami has dropsy too... this one not related to bloodworms hasnt been eating them for ages he is massive and pine cone.. might uthanise tonight if i can put myself up to it finally got my water bore test results back tonight too.. the cold water supply came up perfect thinkning hotwater side might be source of iron oxide (rust in hotwater cylinder) as have seen the odd bit of rust in the hot water upon investigation found out our (2year old cylinder) is constructed of ceramic lined steel , the ceramic can be affected due to too low ph.. the only thing that showed up on out well water was the ph is 6.4 . which causes corossion.... might be new cylinder time ! trying to put a finger on why iv had such big losses since my move to the "new" house going to start using a continous rheem gas hot water cylinder to heat the water for now until resolve hot water cylinder prob! why cant things be simple!
