Carlos & Siran
howdy guys. We've just made a DIY co2 system we found on the net, we followed the instructions 100% and used a air curtain we bought from our lps. The first thing we noticed when we hooked it all up was it started siphoning water back into the yeast bottle. I guess that isn't right? does anyone know what we've done wrong? MarkLB
Hi. I'd raise the yeast mixture bottle above the tank
spoon
mite have done it if you used hot or warm water to make the yeast mix but should go away in a day
Zev
A Co2 proof non return valve would help, if you put the bottle above the tank, make sure it is secure and can't be knocked over otherwise it will run into the tank as well. If the pressure is not sufficient in your system it may siphon as well, check that it is not leaking anywhere.
adamkerrnz
Another good idea is to use a second bottle filled with water as a gas seperator/bubble counter. This prevents any yeast mixture going into your tank
Carlos & Siran
Hiya Thanks for the information, we have sorted it out. Another question is do we have to keep feeding the bug with more yeast and sugar every day or do we just change it once a week? Thanks
spoon
it may last longer than a week it just dependes on temperature and mix etc you will know when its slowed down then just replace it
LYNDYLOO
Just replaced mine when the Flow slowed down. Think it was about once every 2-3 weeks.
kiwipete
Hiya Thanks for the information, we have sorted it out. So, what was the issue of the back syphoning?
Carlos & Siran
it was because we used warm water for the bug, as it cooled down in sucked the water up the hose. we just let it cool down first now. Cheers for the heads up Spoon

mattwa
Is the only benefit from these for plants? Is it good for the fish too?
diver21
from what ive read, what can happen is that the co2 can replace the o2 in the water and cause the fish stress and poss die. so not the best thing in that term.
Zev
The fish don't mind as long as you do not saturate the water with Co2, the problem with unregulated systems is that you cannot control how much goes in the tank.
Guest
At night you just turn on an airstone as the plants only need CO2 when the lights are on but with a DIY CO2 setup you can't control how much CO2 is put in the tank.
