LYNDYLOO
I guys and girls. Is there anyone here that could help me, My Aunty and Uncle live in Wanaka, they own the Capriccio Restaurant. They have a Tropical tank set up in the Restaurant, and they are having major problems with it. They're at the stage where they are ready to get rid of it. They have a major problem with Algae at the Moment, had a few fish deaths as well. Tank used to be set up as a Crayfish Tank, then they conferted it to a Tropical. Tank is approximately 300 ltrs, running a Cf1200 on it. Will post the Water Parameters when I get them. Only have a coupe of Swordtails, Few Corys, Few Bn's and some Neons in the Tank at the Moment. No Plants. I have suggested to do a complete Black Out of the Tank for 3-4 Days, hoping this will Kill the Algae, they're not to keen on this as it's not a terribly good look to have in the Restaurant. Other thing I have suggested is to fill the Tank with Plants hoping that these will compete with the Algae and outrun it if you know what I mean. I'm thinking by the sounds of it, they may have to treat with E-Mycin. Any other ideas as to what we can do apart from pulling the Tank apart and starting from stratch
VinsonMassif
Yes. Add plants to take care of the excess nutrients. Even if it is a mass of java moss. And take out any wood they have in the tank. Wood breaking down ads to the Total Dissolved Organic Compounds and Solids. The break down of this uses up a lot of the available Carbonate if they have acid water, thus depriving the filter bacteria. Plus up the water changes to 50-70% a week. And cut back on feeding to twice or 3 times per week. An algal bloom happens when there is an imbalance. Often too much Nitrogen and too much Phosphate. Even if they get another CF1200 it will help. Over filtration is better than under. A CF1200 is barely enough for 300L ime.
Southerrrngirrl
What kind algae is it? I'm no expert on treating algae but I believe the different types of algae require different methods of treatment, therefore it would be a good idea to identify the type of algae before treating? You could always try convincing them to try blacking it out again. Sure it might not look very good for a restaurant but I'm sure the customers would understand, perhaps they could put a little sign on the tank stating the reason for the blackout. And its not like its going to be forever.
LYNDYLOO
Just talked to them, they have apparently done the whole Black Out thing and there's been no Change. They have talked to the Guy at Kongs, apparently Kongs have said the Algae Problem is becasue of the Water down in Wanaka, so now they have recommended a UV Steriliser. Caryl
E-Mycin only works on cyanobacter, which isn't actually algae.
LYNDYLOO
Looks like they have ordered a UV Steriliser from Kongs. They have been told it will clear the Tank in 3 Days, so will be very interesting to see if it does as they say it will. LYNDYLOO
Not sure what sort of Algae they have Caryl :-? Sort of thought maybe E-Mycin might be the last thing on the List to try, but now hoping the UV Steriliser will fix the problem.
