killifan
Are icecream containers suitable for keeping white worms in and what conditions make them go all slimy?
livebearer_breeder
perfect for whiteworms
Alan
Too wet. Too warm. No ventilation. Ideal way to wipe them out. Alan
livebearer_breeder
i grew them like that and have had no probs!!
Ira
I've got a bunch in a big polystyrene box. Been in there for about 2 years, I even forget to feed them for a few months at a time they're still living happily. Speaking of which, I need to make some food for them... killifan
O.K. I've had two lots go 'off' in icecream containers- it did have slits in the lid but maybe not big enough. I have a large polystyrene fish bin I will try next. Would it work just to have the soil in part of it rather than fill it right across. Also should I have the lid partly open? How else do you ventilate thru polystyrene? I only have a 2-3' fish tank so don't need millions of whiteworms! In the icecream containers they soon seemed to get overcrowded
Alan
A bit what Sahe?? Try breeding them in the heat, or closed to air, or too wet. I'm not wrong LB Alan
Caryl
I bred mine in ice cream containers but was told by an old aquarist that a wooden box was best, like an old tea box, as it breathes.

Ira
If you can't find them there are heaps of people locally that have them or buy them direct from Biosuppliers, I don't have their address here at work though.
killifan
if you get in touch with bikiegirl, she will have some ready for sale next month at a better price than the LFS. If you can't wait till then ask if your LFS can gertsome in for you, they do it in in Whg at least on request only.

shiuh
do you absolutely need soil to breed this thing. or a moisten bread will do?
Ira
That's sorta like saying, "Do you really need water to keep fish, or will soggy fish food work?"

killifan
they need soil to live in like garden worms and they need bread etc to eat.
shiuh
what type of soil is needed. and where do i get them?
Luke*
I've asked about this before too, the general consensus was that potting mix was fine even if it says " contains slow release fertiliser." I instead went for soil from the garden at home but this had manure in it and I think the culture i tried to seed off this may have died. Now there's some other little white things in there, and they're not baby whiteworms either. I'd just go for unmanured/unfertilised soil next time, but that's just me. Pegasus
Normally the 50/50 mix of straight potting mix without ferts and garden soil works good. You have to ensure that it is kept moist... but not too wet. The small white things you see Luke are mites.. but they are harmless. Bill.
