VinsonMassif
I this crypt C. wendtii "Mi Oya"? And is that a flower stalk it is shooting up? (the leaves are dirty with stirred up sand)
phoenix44
it certainly looks like a flower stalk. :bounce: congrats. ask supasi what type of crypt it is, he will know.
supasi
Hard to tell the crypts true ID until the flower opens. And yes that is a flower. Congratulations. Thats unusual for it to flower submersed. Keep taking photos as the flower is usually only at its best for one day, and that day is not to far away. Get as many of the flower and we can try see if we can ID it.
VinsonMassif
OK I will take a photo every day. Will it shoot for the surface before it opens? If so it still has 18" to go...
supasi
Well they dont usually flower underwater, but no it wont shoot to the top. (at least I dont think it will) The flower is about 24 hours from opening so keep an eye on it. It usually opens during early morning. Shame its submerged as mine put out an unusual scent. Keep us posted
VinsonMassif
Interesting. I got it from Redwood Aquatics. He had it planted ~600mm deep too. It will be my first flower on a Crypt.
supasi
Check out photos of mine here http://supasi.wordpress.com I have had several flowers now from two different plants now wit the possibility of a third plant soon. I have a suspicion that yours may be Cordata, but we will see once it flowers.
alanmin4304
Not sure on the ID of the crypt but it is a flower. Are the leaves red on the underside? What is the plant in the background? Is it uraguayensis?
VinsonMassif
yes on both counts alan. red on underside. and uruguayensis. the leaves are almost 600mm too, growing strong. my balansae crypt is almost 600mm long too
VinsonMassif
So those crypts are emerse and in pots??? Do they grow better that way? I am so going to grow some of mine like that. Excellent idea.
supasi
Yes they are emersed. I have a tank of crypts grown submered too and the same plants look totally different in each tank. Hence only true way to ID is by the flower. Do it, its better than fish, lol
alanmin4304
Possibly a variety of blassii, I think Bob has a number of varieties of it including a broad leafed one. Flowers that develop submersed usually deteriorate fairly quickly which is a pity because many crypt flowers are spectacular. I had it for a while but it did not do well in my setup. He grows them submersed and emersed and I have seen some of that plant in flower grown emersed and almost a metre high. Can't remember much about the flower other than it was pretty spectacular. VinsonMassif
Awesome idea Supasi. I have a spare 200L tank I have been wondering what to do with. An emerse tank it shall be! I will be watching it every hour from tomorrow. It is next to my fry tank. I have been watching them. Cherry barb fry which are only 1-2mm long atm. VinsonMassif
Today's photo and a full one of the uruguayensis
alanmin4304
Love the uraguayensis. It is a pity they are so hard to propagate. I had three emersed all summer and none even looked like throwing a runner. I have just moved them inside under artificial light so see how we go this year under artificial light. I have changed the light this year and will report later on success or not.
supasi
Not far from opening now :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I have to agree about the Uragauyensis, its a nice plant. Must keep an eye out for it myself.
VinsonMassif
I would love to have mine throw a runner out. They are such nice looking plants. I had mine specially ordered in by HFF, was only $20.
alanmin4304
They seldom throw runners submersed or emersed and the way to propagate them is secret squirel and risky. I have not got any this summer. Paid $50 for my first one and about 2 months later the same person sold some on this site for $18 so I bought a couple more. I have had a few pups but not easily. VinsonMassif
No movement on the flower spike, it may have grown another 5mm is all. I setup an emerse tank of plants today. A work in progress, will have a few more tweaks until I get it just to my liking.

VinsonMassif
Here is today's photo. There is a second flower spike at the back of the plant. I will start another thread for my emerse tank experiment.

VinsonMassif
I moved on the weekend and transferred them into another tank. The first flower spike melted away but the second is growing strong. No update pictures because we have no internet at home yet.
