SamH
Has anyone ever used a bath tub for keeping fish in? Just in the short term? I'd imagine you could put in a couple of heaters and it would be all good. Where can you buy jars in bulk? Are the quite cheap? Also, I am looking at getting a (breeding) pair. If anyone in Auckland has a pair, doesn't matter if they've bred before or not, that they'd be willing to sell, please post or PM me. I don't really mind what fin type but I do like Half Moons and Plakats. I'm looking for some nice, easy Bettas to breed and would love to see some pics
alanmin4304
When I first started breeding tropicals I put all my spare cash into building the fishhouse. I bought 5 baths that were seconds and used them till I got enough to build the tanks. They work well---you only need something that holds water. To get new ones you would contact Arthur Holmes, they are very helpful. Also, I am looking at getting a (breeding) pair. SamH
Thanks Alan, Did you have to clean them and how did you heat them? Do you think regular aquarium heaters would work?
alanmin4304
I didn't clean them as they were new but damaged at the top where it didn't matter. RTVed a plug into each and was heating the whole room. Aquarium heaters will work.

I am going to make some ss mesh cubes for the males and hang these so the top is above water in a purpose made tank that will allow all the water to flow through them. & wast to fall through.. SamH
Not too keen on heating the whole room, I heard it costs alot, as do 50+ aquarium heaters! It wouldn't be for their whole lives but just when the start fighting to when they are sold.
Discusguru
No difference from the jar. They'll still be confine to the space within the ss mesh just like the battery hen
alanmin4304
It is a lot cheaper to heat a room if it is well insulated. The problem is that they usually are not.
diver21
well having 50 odd heaters in 50 tanks will defenatly heat the whole room! ive got 6 tanks with heaters in one of my rooms and the air in there is allways alot warmer than the rest of the house (great place in the morning). if the rooms insulated enough the aquarium heaters will all heat the room and other tanks and containers in the room, take amazonians fish room for example! alanmin4304
I built a purpose made fish house with between 50 and 60 tanks and heated it with a one bar heater that hardly ever came on. It is all about how well you insulate it, not how you heat it.
fishbreeder
really, is it an outside room?
alanmin4304
Seperate building heavily insulated. Conctrete floor with polystyrene and steel, batts and sisalation walls and ceiling and lined with flat colour steel with joints sealed with RTV and painted with antimould paint. You should have seen the young fellas with weird smoking habits eying it up during open homes. If you put the work into the building you save heaps on heating in the long run. Sold the house and fish house with it. Stands now full of exotic timber and a few tanks behind he shed.
silver-foxx
No difference from the jar. They'll still be confine to the space within the ss mesh just like the battery hen that is why i DONT eat battery hen eggs. BACK TO THE SUBJECT:- I might give this a try http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page ... icleid=809 leave the father with the fry ?? alanmin4304
It certainly sounds like it would work if done properly. My question would be that if the father is the alpha male and there is little agression how will the males develop good fins. I have always worked on the theory that the males being able to see each other and flare encourages good fin development.
diver21
someone on here did do the father with fry method and reported that the fry grew faster and healthier with their father than without and they recommended it. can rember who it was though. and the father did all the culling

alanmin4304
Are you sure the father is culling the ones that need to be culled or the ones that might threaten his position as alpha male?

SamH
What would be the minimum tank size to keep the father and all his fry in until they're able to be sexed? And would they have to spawn in that tank or could they be moved later on?
