fins
Hey I was wondering how everyone breeds these. How do they breed? Will they sell? Got any ideas on an ideal tank setup? What about tempreture, I just saw them at the LFS and saw some outside in a Pond. thanks
Caryl
WCMM are very easy to breed but you won't make much money out of them. Most of our members give them away. They can be set up in tropical or cold tanks.
kim
they are lovely little fish and we sell lots of them and are always after them, most of the shops up in auckland sell them fast, they are cheep but you can sell a few 100 at a time so you can make some good money on them if you can breed lots. fins
I guess I will have a few 15 litre tanks with a pair in each. Filtration: Sponge filter, no heating nessesary. The tanks will be bare bottomed with java moss for the fish to spawn on. I will feed the fry micro worms. Does that sound about right? livebearer_breeder
yes leave the tank bare, but with a large bunch of fine leaved plants or similiar substitute provided for the depositing of the eggs, i suggest you have up to 3males and 6 females in each tank to maximise productivity. make sure you feed them with top qaulity food. white clouds breed more or less continuaslly on a daily basis, laying eggs in plant thickets, and neither eating the eggs nore there young, the fry should be found swimming near or at the surface among the plants etc and should be moved to a rearing tank. the fry are large enough to eat newly hatched brine shrimp. kylefish02
When i used to breed these guys They didnt swim at the top when newly hatched the cling to the glass and all you could see was two little black dots.Dont know where you got they swim at the top coz mine never did that even when they were older
Caryl
Mine would cling to the glass but also were found at the top too. If you shine a torch straight down on them their eyes reflect the light and they are easier to see.

Caryl
Livebearer_breeder that was uncalled for. The aim of this forum is for everyone to offer an opinion, regardless of whether it is the same, or otherwise, to those already given. We each have our own experiences to share. jude
I know this is a bit off topic for breeding but these fish sound nice. Will they survive in warmer water - 25-26C. And do they have any bad habits like gobbling up all the plants? Cheers Judy
fins
The only ones I have seen have been in cold water tanks. I dont think they eat plants.
Wok
I have a pretty heavily planted tank and had 12 of the white clouds in the tank with my Orandas. White clouds have behaved very well and kept to themselves. great community fish
Caryl
No problems Jude. They are often called poor man's neons (same size, if a bit bigger) but they are pretty enough in their own right. I have kept them in both cold and tropical. 25 - 26 is fine. They do not eat plants. jude
That's great - I want some. Would they be tough enough for grandson's tank? LOL For those of you who don't know - grandson is three and fed his fish salt and vinegar crisps .......... LOL Cheers Jude

Melanotaenia
Jude, WCCM are stricly a 'semi-topical' fish. According to my two axelrod books they have a range of 9-23 degrees C but ideal is 18-21. I think they will survive at higher temps but not very well... interestingly the LFS has a big sign about them being cold water fish so I suspect they are some people who have found this out the hard way. I think they are very cool fish though and keep mine with the gold fish...
Rob
My white clouds have survived happily outside (here in Hamilton) for a couple of years now, no problems with the cold.

Interfecus
I want to get some of these at some stage. I don't have the room right now, even if I am upsizing.
shiuh
since this is a breeding forum, can i ask is there a temp range that will induce their spawning? or other condition?
Melanotaenia
well 'the book' says best temp is 18-21 C. What I would do is put some in a roomy tank at around room temp (15? depends where you live) and then slowly increase temp to 22 (1 degree a day) while changing good amounts of water and feeding well and if that doesn't work I'll eat my fish
