how to post fish?

find a courier who will transport live fish, get a price to quote your buyer, Find a poly box, heat pad, double bag the fish and double rubber band. Place bags into box and pack with newspaper. Label it to show it contains live fish and fragile, this side up etc. Deliver it to the courier allowing ample time so that it is delivered the next morning. Let your buyer know when they can expect the fish to arrive at their address so they can be there to greet them.

Ring the courier first to see what the latest time is they will accept parcels for overnight to your chosen destination. Get fish to courier just before this time so they are not sitting in the depot for an unnecessary length of time.

I did not label my poly box "live fish". I double bagged the fish (2nd bag up the opposite way to the first so each bag is rubber banded at opposite ends) with 1/4 water to 3/4 air then sat it upright in the middle of the box and packed bubblewrap around it to keep it still. Make sure the bag can't move or fall over. (Newspaper works as well but I have lots of spare bubblewrap  )

I then labelled the box "Fragile" and "This End Up" on all the appropriate sides.

The couriers (either NZ Post or NZ Couriers - I can't remember, ask tracytrout as they were sent to her) were quite happy with it and said they would make sure it was also labelled so no other boxes were put on top of it. This box went between islands.

I did not use any heat pads at this time of year (although I am about to go and put a sweatshirt on as temp has dropped suddenly! )

thanks alot , although i seem to still be a bit confused about which company to find to post , and the procedures. packing is fine , just wondering do i have to ring the companies like nz post?

or do i just get a posting ticket or something?

and also how much would the sending cost (average price) to send within north island and how much down to south island

(from north island)

I use NZ Couriers - within the NI they charge $19.50 for cash sales. You will also need to purchase or obtain a polybox or a solid container, and a heat pack. I purchase courier tickets which are discounted at $12.50 each I think but even then by the time I purchase a polybox and heatpack it still adds up. The price depends on the size box you use also and the cheaper rate is normally for a box less than .25 cubic metres.

Selling bulk fish makes it worth it and often I carry part of the cost myself for multiple purchases.

Not hard to do, if you arrive at the counter with the fish boxed they will take it, I label mine clearly and never a problem. If you ring and ask will they take it the person on the end will usually say no.

Don't post NZpost they have lost too many fish/put them on the wrong truck and delayed them 2-3days with us..

NZcouriers is great prices Jim R quoted are correct, you can drop at the depot or just call the 0800 number on there website and arrange a pick up from your house and pay cash very easy :)

NZC. LH tickets (cash price) $15.50 for 5kg/ .025cu. m.

Island to Island (cash sale ) $29.80 " "

NO courier company will accept liability you ship at your own risk.

Costs more to ship out of Auckland than elsewhere in the country but in saying that I may be slightly high with the price I gave you as I buy books of tickets and they work out at $12.50 approx each. Forgot to check when I was down there tonight dropping off fish. The part about liability is most important and both seller and buyer need to realise that. NZ Couriers has a sheet that they hand out for cash says which says that they don't pay attention to 'this way up' etc stickers but they seem to be pretty careful.

Pickup in Auckland is only done in the morning which does mean your fish are packaged quite a bit longer than if you drop at the depot around 6.30pm in the evening.

If NZ couriers was the only company in the country I would rather deliver goods myself. Sorry but I had a bad experience with them. Nothing to do with fish tho. I vent my spleen about them any chance i get lol

nz couriers wouldnt pickup anything live for me so didnt bother getting an account with them...they will take but not pick up :-?

nz post :-? mixed bag really, seems different policy in every post shop otherwise ive found them good in the past but even better take straight to courier post and send (same company as far as i know just dif name)

fastways seem reasonable going on website prices - maybe thats for account holders ($12 north and $25-30 south

nz post i think are about $15 north

$30 south

going rates seem to be about;

15-20 north is.

24-40 south island

pretty good when you can purchase something at one end of the country today and it be here tomorrow

:D sounds good,

but i think there is a cheaper company , as i see alot of people off trade me sending

within north island for 15 dollars and to south island something like 20 to 25 dollars.

some people absorb some of the costs of postage ;) and or have accounts which normally means cheaper as appose to cash sales clients

NZ couriers are only too happy to come out an pickup live fish from us? lol seems they have a different "policy" depending on the driver etc... It is very hard when some people say yes some say no, I have rung them numerous times (to see what they say and see if things differ) and have always been told they accept live fish but wont pay out on deaths. They haven't lost a single package for me and they pickup from my house late afternoon so very happy with their services, it seems bizarre they charge more out of Auckland I used to drop fish off at the Albany depot and got charged the same as down here?

I have heard good things about fastways but haven't used their services.

I wouldn't send anything I wanted the person to see alive at the other end through nzpost, of the last 4 lots of fish I sent with them 3 got stuck on the wrong truck or lost and delivered late loosing most the fish. I used to have good luck with them but wont take the risk any more, I can fully understand when a mistake happens but 75% of the time is pretty bad odds. I think the main problem was the tickets for overnight/2-3 day delivery are similar and if someone slack is sorting the packages and doesn't care they get stuck in the wrong bin. One of my main complaints with them wasn't that they lost the fish but they could tell me where they were for the 2-3days before they were delivered, the person who purchased the fish had paid good money for tracking but it wasn't there.

End of the day it is all a bit hit and miss but I have shipped alot of fish and not had a huge amount of problem make sure you stress it is at their cost/risk bag the fish well and good luck.

The reason you get spikes in the system is because courier companies have lists of undesirable freight and anything that breathes is on that list, which means different people have different views about what is acceptable. Couriers are like other industries in that you get good ones and you get bad ones.NZC prices are consistent throughout the country.
