alanmin4304
I use flouro lumoflor T8s and cool white ---works for me.
phoenix44
the plants in your tanks look awesome... i presume that with the powerglos?
alanmin4304
The tubes used for corals are high in blue light which makes your plants grow compact. So long as you are getting red light from somewhere it might work well (just come back from my light consultants, one of whom is an aquatic plant grower)
phoenix44
:bounce: sheer brilliance as always! Thanks alan, Ill see how this light affects growth, before and after the addition of extra red spectrum light.
alanmin4304
The guy I was talking to uses them and flouro lumiflor (which are used by MAF for growing plants and have good things to say about them) They are higher in red than growlux I think
phoenix44
so where do you get your lumiflor's from?
alanmin4304
Lamp specialists. Any of the 10000k tubes should be similar---there are slight differences as shown by the colour when you look at them.
spoon
i had a yarn to chris at lamp specialists today he explained a great deal to me he is on this forum (cant remember his username ) he explained that a machine tests k rating and this technology has been around sine the early 1900s , however human eyes cant see the full spectrum so a tube that is high in blue light (not all of the blue is visible) may have a high 18000k rating but appear pink to us humans because we can cant see the blue light its putting out but may see some of the red which is (in the eyes of the testing machine) a really small part of the light output. perhaps if he sees this he will explain it better than me
phoenix44
that's understandable. there are plenty light spectra that the human eye cannot see. so the tube may be emitting the light but we cannot see it. Limitations of being human i suppose. blue light which makes your plants grow compact. So long as you are getting red light from somewhere it might work well ( that's pretty much the gist of things really, so as long as the tube emits both red and blue plants should be sweet :bounce:
alanmin4304
There are specific frequencies of the blue light which the plants need and the plant lights are generally developed to have high levals at that range. It is quite simple realy---what works is correct for you.
phoenix44
Just thought I should report back... the tubes are working wonders! the tiger lotus's leaves are much broader and larger and have more red in them. It sprouts a new leaf everyday, and man does it grow fast! I can see how much its grown in a matter of a day! the sag. subulata is in heaven and there are no less than 5-6 shoots for the flowers :bounce: and even my precious anubias hastifolia - which i thought would hate bright light has managed to sprout a new leaf! :bounce: pics will follow if needed! phoenix44
yep! crypts are doing well. i left them as is. if they let out more pups they can grow wild if they need to. the tiger lotus is awesome. 2 babies, and 2stalks are now almost 2ft long!!! the lights are sheer magic, ha ha. all the plants have gone mental. 10 flower stalks at last count for the sag subulata. PS- i got told that dwarf val does not exist?? lol.. its sag. dwarf sag.. sag subulata... Me thinks.
Dave+Amy
lol really??? Your dwarf sags are WAY bigger than mine I wonder why that is?
phoenix44
if you bought yours from a shop, they are the emersed form. mine converted over to being submersed completely. so they are real dark green and tall. but when i first got mine, i was puzzled as to why some of the plants grew tall and some stayed short, and were a lighter green. all the plants were from the same batch etc... some jjust take longer to grow than others.
