Insect Direct
Any one know what pet food labels must require by law. I searched the net for a couple of hours last night with some headway but doesnt seem all that clear to me, so just wondering if anyone here has some practical advice. like; not for human consumption? ingredients? im sure ive seen/purchased fish food sold on that auction site without any label at all, is this legit? wanting to sell some feed i use for my crickets but not sure what packaging should/must have onit, any help/advice would be appreciated. cherry Matt
phoenix44
I think they have to order ingredients in order of the highest quantity of substance found in a typical batch. so if chicken is the most common ingredient that goes first, then corn.... and so on... however - the law has limitations. so some companies weigh the ingredients and then list them which is fine.... but then you have the odd sneak who weighs the wet mass of the chicken and not its equivalent dry mass... this is a huge issue if you are buying a dry food. cause then chicken or beef or whatever meat it is; may not be the primary ingredient any more, cause its all been dehydrated - and so it really should be 5th on the list and not first. sneaky sneaky huh? its a bit like McDonalds and the whole Prime beef mince saga - where Prime was the name of the company and not the type of mince used
Insect Direct
lol that is sneaky abit like gourmet and premium not having to be any different to any other food, i also remember reading in cyber land last night about the ingredient order regarding weight as youve mentioned i suppose i just copy ingredient from product i want to sell to my own label...maybe also read if contains ruminant protein which it does - label must contain "NOTICE NOT TO BE FED TO SHEEP, CATTLE, DEER, ALPACAS, GOATS OR OTHER RUMINANT ANIMALS" but this does not apply if sold as cat or dog food.....so cricket food must contain this? gonna be alot of label for a little packet lol must be some authority i can contact to get the run down on this

livingart
if your talking food for crickets i think only to be fed to crickets and breakdown of what it contains will be sufficient i have talked to my head cricket and a few wild ones and they assure me there is no laws governing what they eat, so they can pigout on what they like
alanmin4304
NZ food safety requirements are for food labelling for human consumption and are contained in the Food Act and Regulations. They only apply to food for human consumption.
