Jatt16
i was wondering if fridge filtered water would be alright for discus. I would heat the water in a seperate tank for automatic water changes and i checked the ph and it was around 5-6 . would there be any problem. phoenix44
seems like a lot of trouble to go through! tap water with prime also does the trick just as well, and with a fraction of the trouble.
Jatt16
thanks for the reply but the prime wouldnt reduce the ph isnt just conditioner
phoenix44
ph 6 onwards to just above 7.6 is ok for discus. they can tolerate a wider range than that though. look at matching the pH in your tank. to lower the ph you can use driftwood, peat, extra floating leaves etc.
Adrienne
My discus tanks sits at a pH of 6. I water change up to 30 - 50% every 2-3 days and use the water straight from the tap (heated) and put aqua plus into the tank. The water from the tap is pH7.8. My pH level change is virtually non existant after a water change.
Jatt16
So theres really point to using fridge water. So im goin to tap water
Dave+Amy
Tap water works fine with my Discus and I change water (50%) every 2nd day, I heard no matter how hard or soft your tap water is your Discus would be fine with it when adjusted to it? Thinking about adding more driftwood into the tank though to keep the pH low.
Jatt16
the only problem the water is supposed to be for my breeding pair discus

supasi
What is the point?? Fridge filter water is the same as any filtered water but cold. The frigde filter is just a carbon filter. no different from running water through a cannister filter full of carbon. It won lower the ph or make it softer. Jatt16
how about running it through a bench filter i think we have one of those
phoenix44
you can if you want to... but really.. if the fish cannot cope with a tap water change with some dechlorinator added to the tank then I see no merit in breeding that fish. I've kept literally thousands of discus over the years, and the only really sensitive ones were the freshly wild caught heckles. Im sure yours will survive a water change. HTH. supasi
how about running it through a bench filter i think we have one of those They are only water filters, thats all they do, Filter the water, What is the point. Go put a bucket under the house downpipe if you want soft water.Thats where i used to get the water for my discus. Just heat before adding. Adrienne
the only problem the water is supposed to be for my breeding pair discus My two females pair up with different males all the time and spawn in the community tank. The eggs only get to the stage where they start to detach though as the other fish eat them. They must be happy with the water conditions in my tank and as I said above I use tap water with the aqua plus added. They spawn every time I do a 50% water change.
