Neon
Hi, The plant database says that vallisneria spiralis is allowed, but is it not allowed in Auckland? It's listed as a pest plant on the Auckland regional council website: http://www.arc.govt.nz/environment/plants-and-animals/search-for-plants/index.cfm?63E0F20E-14C2-3D2D-B905-50098EBBE4B9&plantcode=Valspi Also the biosecurity website says it's an "unwanted organism" http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/pests/vallisneria-spiralis Anyone know what the story is? Cheers, Sarah
supasi
Vallisneria is one of those plant thats rules are not set in stone. Regional councils do ban certain plants in certain areas. I just stay on the safe side and dont keep it at all, there are others that will nicely fill that space such as Dwarf sag(which usually aint that dwarf) There is lake fulls of V Spiralis in my area and it is illegal to remove it
alanmin4304
The government can ban plants nationally but the regional council can ban additional plants in its region if they are a local problem. My understanding is that V. gigantea is nationally banned and others may be locally banned.
Neon
Thanks Alan and Simon, maybe I should get rid of mine as I don't like to break the rules :-? Thing is it looks really nice at the moment, and is sending out runners. On the other hand it's blocking light from the other plants in the tank
