Caper
Everything was fine in the tank until I thought I'd try taking pics with all the lights out. Well, I think I spooked the barbs and tetras. I could hear them "jumping/splashing". Yesterday, I couldn't find one of the albino barbs (I only had 2). When I got home from work yesterday, he/she was dead Is it possible that the fish could have hit the top of the tank and injured himself/herself. I know I will never try to get pics that way again, just by the noise I figured I spooked them. Caper
Caryl
Fish murderer!!! Yes it is possible they walloped their heads on the lid or crashed into the glass. Some species are more prone to doing this than others. It was more likely the flash than the noise. How noisy can you be just taking a photo? :-? jude
It happened because she kept yelling at them to say cheese
whetu
Aaawww you girls, give Caper a break! Caper, I'm surprised your fish were so startled to the light going off - surely it happens every night, you just turned it off at a different time? Anyway, sorry for your loss and I hope the rest of the tank's inhabitants have settled back down after their fright.
Caper
Thanks whetu, imagine calling me a murderer...    Did I tell you about the time I held the ex's head underwater...no, I didn't...just kidding folks No, I meant the noise the fish were making, I wasn't making noise 8) I had turned all the lights off in the livingroom and in the tanks, I thought I read that somewhere that would help getting good pics. But obviously it freaked out the barbs and tetras! Maybe the flash Caryl, I'm not sure since I don't really know how to work my camera and was trying all different settings :-? 8) but I had to stop I knew by the noise THEY were making that someting was upsetting them. The funny thing is whetu that when I turn the lights off in their tank at night, it's almost as if I had a magnet turn on at the top and they all come up, funny looking actually! Oh and no more deaths so Caryl I think it may have hurt itself which led to his/her demise Caper
Stella
Oh Caper, that is not a good ending to artistic experimentation! I find my fish do not seem to react to the flash (but I still feel bad about it) however they seriously dislike the little orange flashing light that the camera does when it is focusing. If I have the orange light going I just get photos of tails! It may have been coincidence, stress or injury, no way of knowing really. Caper
True Stella, could have just been coincidence. But, hearing the splashing/jumping it would not surprise me if the poor fish injured himself/herself. Darn, Jude I forgot to tell them to say cheese maybe that was it!  I'll keep trying to get decent pics, as was said before by someone that's one of the good things about digital, just keep taking them. OH, OH, OH, I know instead of saying cheese maybe I'll just tell them to STOP and pose pretty for the camera, think that will work!!! Caper
Southerrrngirrl
I killed one of my barbs too. There was one that had died in the tank, so I scooped him out with the net and put the net with barb in it, in the bucket next to the tank for disposal after I got home from work. I get home from work and I'm looking in the tank going.... "I see 3 barbs, wheres number 4?" (Cos I had 5 before 1 died). Anyway, I go to take dead barb away for disposal and to my complete and utter horror, there are TWO barbs lying in the net. My first thought was, one jumped out of the tank and made it in to the net? No silly, the tank is completely covered. I must have accidentally caught a perfectly healthy barb while I was scooping out dead barb and made him suffocate and dry to death. As soon as I came to this realisation I cried for poor wee barb. (I'm such a wuss) I'm still horrified right now. If only I had checked the net before leaving for work... Caper
Oh Southerrrfgirrl, that is so sad, I'm so sorry for you loss. Yep, know what it's like to cry over fish loss, been there! Accidents happen and this was an accident so don't be hard on yourself! Caper
whetu
Southerrrngirrl, the irony of that is that if you had wanted to catch the barb, I bet you couldn't have done it! They are fast-swimming little things and I end up chasing them all around the tank before I can catch one! I know just how you feel and have also cried over my poor little fish when they die. Ira
I'm sure everyone's accidentally caught fish they didn't want before. I've had tetras sucked up the hose while doing water changes before and only found them a while later flipping around in the puddle outside. I've had a pearl gourami and brazillian puffer do the same, but they obviously don't fit through the hose...
Caryl
I've had a BN or 2 go down the plughole too when emptying a filter
