caserole
It would be a good Idea to find out the general hardness of you tap water = calcium and magnesium, this is what you don't want in the water.
Dave+Amy
I'd go with heaps of Java fern and nothing else if I were you, cheap enough and grows fast. oops meant moss, so Diver have you managed to breed them successfully yet? diver21
no, no luck yet. i went to the LFS to get a GH test kit but they had none, so i got this thing called a 'water softner pillow'. i got a 20l container and filled it with tap water and had a large pump in it with only a bag of peat and this pillow in there. a week later after feeding the glowlights up on daphnia brine shrimp and bloodworms i put two into a tank that has a mesh covering the bottom, a ball of java moss and a spawning mop made from black wool, temp at 28 deg. their conditioning was seperate and at 26 deg. netted them one at a time getting the fattest female and brightest male and just put them into the tank. they got put in last night and when i checked thismorning at 9 and 11 there wasnt any eggs. dont know what else to try next, was looking forward to a nice big school of tetras
Dave+Amy
well you've done more than me anyway lol I didn't end up having time to even breed them, but I might give them to Dave's sister to have a turn with and see if she has any luck. diver21
yea that was their 3rd try, the first time i didnt have the softner and the mesh down, the second time the mesh was in but i didnt have it set up correctly and i found them under the mesh, and i thought third time was a charm, oh well, might look into an easier tetra like black widow to get into first
caserole
 blackwidows and glowlights are just as easy as each other. Pillow and peat was a good idea. Your temp is a lot high, I would have gone for between 20 - 24C. When simulating the rainy season you decrease the temp.
diver21
so is that conditioning at 24 and have the breeding tank at about 22?
caserole
yep, but a drop in temp and change in water chemistry is more important then actual temp you reduce it by 21, 22, 23'ish it's not so important.
diver21
well yesterday i turned down the heater to about 25, a 3 deg drop and now i see eggs on the bottom! YAY! so now i guess i gotta get my brine shrimp hatchery working and make some food for these little critters
caserole
They will hatch tomorrow and need feeding in 3-4 days. Just add a drip of B/S to begin with(day 3), if you see orange belly's feed a little more. Eggs should be clear, if they all go white they are dead, common for a first spawn. Congrates and good luck
diver21
well theyre all clear at the moment, so heres hopeing
caserole
It normally takes a few hours for them to go white, they should have done that by now so :bounce: :bounce: so far so good.
diver21
ha, hoped a bit too much and now it seems theyre all white. not fertilised or got fungus? some look fluffy but it looks like maybe 1 or 2 might still be clear, but since you said that they should hatch today i will have to have a really close look and see if i see any wrigglers
caserole
Wait until it is dark, then shine a touch acoss the tank while lifting up spawning media. You will see the nymph spiral to the bottom - they're quick so don't blink.
diver21
wow, theres heaps, shining the light from the side really shows them up well. just with the eggs on the bottom that are all white and fungus... should i try take the eggs on the bottom out or will it not foul the water, and if i should take the eggs out how do i do it? and when should i start doing water changes/adding water thanks heaps for all your help too caserole
caserole
thanks heaps for all your help too caserole No need, this is the part of MY hobby I like the most > seeing others do well with THEIR hobby! You can remove dead eggs, with an air tube as a siphon. You need to get a sponge filter in asap, so it grows with your fry.
