Dixon1990
What would be the cheapest way of heating a 80-120L pond? Only to around 24ish for some tropicals over the rest of summer.
spoon
use an aquarium heater u will probably find it will hardy be on at all as most of our days have been warm so far , maybe cover it with a sheet of polystyrene at night that will help
David R
The cheapest way to heat it would be to make sure its well insulated. Is it inside or outside? 120L isn't much of a pond is it?
Dixon1990
Outside  It may be a bit bigger, its 4foot long. Made of some black plastic stuff  And if i do end up heating it im just going to keep some fish like Peppered corys and glowlight tetras or something else cheapish that likes a lowish ph , Just to see if they do reproduce, as it will be easier to do w/c and will have constant green water and mossie larvae
Caryl
Why do you need to heat it if it is only over summer? I breed tropicals outside over summer using a 6ft diameter kiddie pool. Don't need to heat it as it stays as warm as the tank inside, if not warmer during the day.
Dixon1990
Just as a precaution..
Ira
Cheapest way long term or cheapest way short term? Short term just make sure it's insulated as well as you can and throw a couple heaters in it. Long term...Probably you'd want something like coils of hose on a roof to be heated by the sun or something along those lines.
Dixon1990
Short term Il just make a insulated lid that goes on each night. might not even happen though, gotta talk to the parents
ryanjury
I think it would work out pretty expensive the ground under the pond would suck the heat out at night.. Might be better to just chuck a big tank outside and line it with poly unless you stick some pond liner on something insulating? The fish you are talking about are probably hardy enough to survive overnight, maybe if you wanted it as a precaution you could set it to 20 to make sure it didn't drop real low in a cold snap? diver21
ild be a bit worried about it getting cold throughout the nite myself... what sort of fish do you breed in a pond caryl?
Andrew_W
solar? just pump all the water through black hosing that is exposed to the sun  can heat a swimming pool, why not a fish pond.
lmsmith
solar? just pump all the water through black hosing that is exposed to the sun  can heat a swimming pool, why not a fish pond. Does that really work? How much pipe do you need exposed to the sun?
Ianab
Does that really work? How much pipe do you need exposed to the sun? 100m coil of black polythene pipe layed on a tin roof will produce a lot of warm water. Enough to make a noticable difference (several degress) to a Parapool anyway. Probably enough to cook the fish in a small pond!!! The problem with a pond is you need the heat at night... whetu
The hardest part with the heated pipe in a pond that size wuld be keeping the water cool enough - it's very easy to overheat with the black pipe method.
Navarre
And with the black pipe style heating you also run the risk of it drawing warm water out of the pond and it cooling at night as it can work as a heat sink. alanmin4304
Like Caryl, I have raised or bred a number of fish in a pond over summer without heat (white clouds, platies and swords, killies etc). You should be sweet after xmas. You will probably have more problems with heat than without.
Insect Direct
guppies been outdoors here for about 3-4weeks and noticed a couple of fry out there (water temp 17 on cold day/night upto 26during day this was about 2weeks ago havent checked temp as of late) only advantage to heating is you can put outside earlier and leave out longer
