YAY OUR COCKATOOS SPAWNED TOO

Recommended Posts

After deciding to do a 50% water change without adding any hot water to give the fish a bit of relief from the hot weather - I guess I triggered a spawn.

Couldn't find my female for all day today and started to worry...until I found her guarding the right side of the pot infront of the Christmas Moss..then found a small patch of eggs :D

here's the proud dad doing the bachelor thing now strutting around the tank.

the eggs were gone this morning..the male looks pretty dam fat i'm guessing he was the one who ate it all :o

I'll be moving them soon into a tank of their own - looking forward to a new tank now thanks to Peter from Port Nicholsons :D

Will a sponge filter be sufficient in a bare bottom tank with a few mini potted plants?

in my little breeding tank, i put some of those bricks that have holes in them. This gives them HEAPS of little caves to choose from - they/she chose the highest one?

I didnt remove the male as I was moving flat and didn't have time to move him. He stayed away from her when she had eggs and wrigglers, but didn't look too scared of her.

The wrigglers I saw were pale creamy colour

OLLY - Oh B***** about your wrigglers but here's hoping next time you're successful

AMY & DAVE....Removing the male is personal choice really....some pairs look after their young, in other cases the male or female or both eat the eggs or fry whn they hatch so it's really just a matter of what fits with the pair you have....I don't speak from experience as I'm a newby aswell but have read quite a bit on the internet and also Bilbo here on forum who knew the breeder of the pairs I have.

Thanks fingers crossed it comes to something moved the mum out to the fishroom tonight.. Its slowly filling back up :) Heater in their tank was set wrong so temp went down to room temp of 22 but pretty sure they're pretty hardy.

Bilbo 50 is better luck than anyone else in this thread has had so count yourself lucky :) Your big pair will breed again and so will all your first babies and you will have them coming out your eyes ears and other places..

Dave+amy - depends on water conditions, individual fish conditioning etc.. But id say 2-3weekly if they eat the eggs obviously take a bit longer if she raises them and you leave her with them..

Hi all.

should I condition them sparately? to fatten them up a bit?

I guess that's up to you but I didn't. I have my pair in a tank that has heaps of Christmas Moss and several caves and crevices.

In fact :D I came home from work today and I had a mate with me to show him the Cockatoos but the female was nowhere to be seen. I figured she might've spawned so I went on a little hunt for her. I peeled the backing from a corner, and on the back of a flower pot I saw this....

:bounce: I can't stop smiling :D
