Dave+Amy
......Peruvians have tiny little dots and Altums don't?
Dixon1990
And size will be much different- Altums get really tall fins upto 30cm
ryanjury
Yeah the theory is that angels carry a nasty internal worm that doesn't affect them much.. However it screws with the discus, I guess it all depends how often you worm and how much you worry about your discus.. As for your altums, have you got any pics and got any id's? I have no doubt that the importers/wholesalers had some fish they sold as altums, but do doubt that they were actually altums.. They will call anything they want common names to sell them
phoenix44
If im thinking of the same batch, they were ordered in specifically as altums from this breeder in auckland who sold them as altums. you never know what you have though until they are big enough to tell... Ithink these were F1's as well...
Olly
i will try and get some photos, they are in a crappy grow out tank that i think used to house a turtle so its really badly scratched
Olly
These photos do these fish no justice at all. Hopefully they give some idea of what they look like. Maybe the experts can tell if they are altums or not. They are awesome whatever they are Sorry about the pic quality, you can see how scratched the tank is
phoenix44
o0O... this is a different batch to what i thought they were... not sure if these are the real altum (as in like the pics of the perfect specimen you will find online or in the wild). - do you get the true "altum" in NZ??? have heard of a couple ppl selling them but never seen the real deal fully grown in NZ. evil_elmo
i'm no angel guru but doesnt look like altum to me i knew animates has some in, good bronze colour but the body shape wasnt the greatest
Dave+Amy
Not a good idea to keep Discus that young with any other fish, they look tiny...you will stunt their growth. Petshops are always getting things wrong - there's a lps that's still selling SAEs as Flying Foxes...
Olly
Ok maybe they aren't altums I dont really mind, they still look awesome, but it sux cos I probably wouldn't have got them if they hadnt said they were altums :-? What type of angel are they then? They are a different shape to my scalares
Dixon1990
Still scare IMO, That or Scalare X Altum Hybrid
Olly
if I bred them what should I sell the young as?
Dixon1990
PM Amazonian He will give you a better idea on species and what to sell as.
phoenix44
these come up on the order lists as "zebras", just thought you'd like to know. personally a zebra has more stripes, but ppl get things wrong. but hey - still nice fish.... can't ask for more. You won't stunt growth in a tank like that i dont think.... discus are a lot hardier than we give them credit for.
Dave+Amy
I guess I'm just pedantic, if I get a Discus with bad proportions then I flick them no use in my display tank..hate the look of small bodies and large eyes. But I guess if you want them in a community tank you probably wouldn't care about their proportions anyway.
phoenix44
lol amy what if you got a discus that looked like this lille fella ->
AMAZONIAN
Hi All IMO they are a very poor speciman of anything: "Scalare or Altum". They have the hallmarks of having been crossed with a "scalare", but have the fin structure and "head and mouth look" of "altum's". I certainly don't like the lack of markings which is a good sign that they have been crossed. If I was selling them they would be advertised as a "Scalare Cross". These are my original IMPORTED "Altums". Good luck.
Olly
They normally have stripes the same as the ones in your photo. I will take another photo of it with its stripes turned on
TM
IMO they are a very poor speciman of anything: "Scalare or Altum". Hard to tell in a bare tank really. I think they have a much nicer shape than what you call Altums, they look more like, well body shape of standard ones and VERY average.. Ollys are small and im sure they will colour up, only time will tell
phoenix44
harsh to say they are a poor specimen i think they are quite cool. :bounce:
Dixon1990
In the pictures they look like either the lights have just been turned on or are very stressed.
Olly
it was dark and I turned the lights on to take the photos
Dixon1990
Well leave the lights on for 20 minutes then Take more photos, The lights SHould Be on the WHOLE time that they have fry anyway, especially since there are other fish in the tank.
