geana_wolf
I am going to get my tank set up this weekend. I’ve read all about fishless cycling and I was wondering if this needs to be done before you add plants? And if you have a lot of plants does this change how you cycle a tank? I plan on having a lot if they are not to hard to grow. Thanks guys Leah
supasi
Its easier to plant plants when setting up the tank. They do not effect the speed of cycling at all. Your tank will cycle faster if you add a small single fish, such as a guppy, that will feed the devolping bacteria with amonia.
alanmin4304
What I do is plant the tank heavily and let it settle for a couple of days then add the fish slowly and give the bacteria a chance to multiply to meet the food being produced, then add a few more slowly. I think fishless cycling is a load of old cobblers, but each to their own. Plants help in getting the balance established as the whole thing is a living system. geana_wolf
OK thanks guys. I might try a few Neon tetras in there first then and see how they go.
karlos
Hi Neons are a bit fragile for cycling IMHO. I would go for zebra danios... These guys are almost bulletrpoof! karlos
