supasi
Question: Does anyone know if its only erothymicin (sp?) is the only effective antibiotic? Or is there other types that work?
lmsmith
What causes they cyano? Is is just phosphate/nitrates, or does there have to be a bacteria in the water too? I've never had it, and would like to know why it occurs so I can continue to prevent it.
Ira
Given that it is a bacteria then I'd say yes, the bacteria does have to be in the water too. You can't have it without it.
alanmin4304
There are millions of different types of bacteria and algae out there all the time. You cannot have a sterile aquarium unless everything is dead. It will therefore be in your aquarium it is just a matter of providing conditions which make it a great place for good bacteria and not cyano. It can be cured with a number of antibiotics as well as hydrogen peroxide and getting the phosphate/ nitrate ratio better. It is not easy to control once you let it get away, and dosing with anything usually brings other complications. I have it in a tank at the moment and I am experimenting with another antibiotic to see if it works.
