I want a smart car! See pics to understand why!

you could stop on a dime with those huuuuge disk brakes, lol.

it would, my ss has 330mm rotors & 4 pot wilwoods & they stop the 1800kg so fast my eyes feel like they are popping out. those probably would make you loose your eyes if you could get a smartcar travelling fast enough! :D

Are they aftermarket Wilwoods, or are those big HSV callipers that you see on every flash commodore, like a factory option/upgrade thing? The reason I ask is because I've always wondered why they bother putting such huge callipers on the back as well as on the front? Sorry for the sidetrack, but its bugged me for years...

BTW a friends civic has wilwood 4-pots and 310mm 2-piece wilwood rotors, its stripped out and probably weighs close to half what your commy does. I've been around Ruapuna a few times in it and it stops on a dime. Its still got the stock LXi drum brakes on the back too!

i have an old ss thats around 400hp & everything on it is after market, they are custom wilwoods & discs are same diameter as the supercar rotors. the new commies have DBA brakes. as for the large calipers/rotors, it reduces "brake fade". I have run mine around pukekohe in full trim & no matter how many laps i do the braking is the same as the first lap. standard brakes get too hot & loose braking capabiliteis.

Yeah I understand that, but on the track the vast majority of the braking is done by the front brakes. A friends dad owns an ex-BTCC Accord, it runs 19" rims because anything smaller won't fit over the front brakes, the rotors are huge and it runs TWO AP 4-pot calipers per side on the front, but the rear brakes hardly look bigger than stock. I realise that on a road car you want it a bit more balanced so the rear end isn't so twitchy under brakes, but the huge 6-pots or whatever they are that are the same size as the fronts just seem excessive.

What I was asking is why the rears are the same size as the fronts. I thought it might have had something to do with towing boats...

v8 racing: there are valves that adjust the "brake bias" from front to rear ie: you can have only the rears braking if you want. this is for altering which treads are doing all the work depending on tread levels etc & how much weight is on the rears. full tank of gas requires more rear braking to keep it balanced.

road cars are something like 60 or 70% front braking, utilities like utes (bounty, courier etc) are 60% rear for loading & towing which makes it scary when unloaded & having to stop in a real hurry. you may as well pull on the hand brake!

Most race cars have brake bias adjustment (including the BTCC Accord I mentioned earlier). I'm talking about the new V8 commodore ss thingys (no idea what model, I generally loathe them (the new road going ones, not the race cars or classics, probably more to do with the kind of people that drive them)) that have got huge aftermarket rotors and callipers on the front, and equally large ones on the back. I've never seen a proper race/performance* car with brakes of equal size front and rear, so was wondering if it is to do with towing heavy objects, or simply a penis-extension. I guess if utes have a bias towards the rear then its feasible the big brakes on the back could be for towing or carrying heavy loads, but I'm not sure if its necessary or just cos it looks cool... ;)

* by "proper race/performance car" I mean one that has been built by someone for motorsport or performance purposes (as yours has been), not just some rich guy who ticked the 'brake upgrade' box at the dealership because his neighbours ones got the big brakes and he didn't want to be left behind.

When you have the big fronts you dont need the rears at all, i know this cause i had a line lock switch which stops the fluid going to the rears completely & realised i had had it turned off for months :o but made no difference.

as for the same size brakes on the rear, not sure if the new ones do but it can't be a bad thing to improve the brake performance. i don't know if you have ever driven a car with race brakes but i'll never own another car without performance brakes! even if its a gutless POS it makes driving soo much safer.

I guess you want a red one coz they go faster

LOL, no! :P I like the look of that Smorche Targa :)

better than talking about washing machines & kitchen appliances

Now THAT would be boring, though I do understand the washer because I've had to take it apart to repair so many times!
