Spink
Can anyone recommend a good place in the Wellington region that would be good to take kids for some rock pooling? I want to take the 4, 14 and 16 year olds out for the day, but we want to make it worthwhile and actually see something! I thought of Island bay, and a friend suggested Pukerua Bay, but does anyone know of anywhere else that could be really good?
Ira
I second Pukerua bay. Only place I've gone.
Stella
I would love to do a rockpooling trip, but have no idea about the critters. Could one of the clubs down there organise one where people with a little bit of knowledge can point out what things are? I would so be up for that! .... then again maybe not, I really don't need to get into native marine tanks too....!
supasi
Do it Stella Ive thought of it, the only thing holding me back is the limited access to clean NSW.
Stella
No, I REALLY don't need to get into native marine! You can see what a bad idea it was me getting into native freshwater....  I so would if I lived around the Wellington coast! (BTW will be coming through Wanganui between now and Dec, will definitely try to chalk in a time to visit you and your creeks!)

Ira
But marine is so much cooler, you get a MUCH higher coolness/cost ratio with local marine, so really you'd be better off switching to marine.
preacher
Its in Porirua if your happy to travel that far. The beach is a nice low slope into the sea and theres lots of marine life in the rocks. I have seen shrimp, bullies (or similar type), crabs, snails.... When we went last summer there was a small shoal of fish swimming around in the shallows that we chased.
Foxglove
Actually as much as I like Pukerua Bay and the nearby (ish  ) Rocky Bay at Titahi Bay, I really would recommend Princess Bay or Island Bay. Princess Bay is between Houghton Bay and Lyall Bay. There is a good selection of rocks, great access and parking and toilets ( well they are important with kids!) The marine life there is varied - it has the full range of rocky coastal life, like lots of different starfish, anemones...fish.
Tsarmina
sounds like a summer club trip
Foxglove
Yeah :bounce: :bounce: I think some club members go regularly when the Marine Education Centre have their open days ( 1st Sunday of the month?) - after seeing them, rock pooling is great and close. whatever, we could do one trip out Pukerua Bay way and one to Island Bay area. OOH, and native fish hunts, night trips, Battle hill picnic, gosh there's so much to do!
