wsun013
Hi all, Recently I have found few of my adult guppies become thin and die after 1 to 2 weeks. Nearly 90% of them are females. I don\t see any white spot or reddish worm thingy at the anals. Any idea ? Currently I am adding salt and increase the temperature to 30C, not sure if it will help. I am also wondering how much sea salt should I add per Liter? http://www.ece.auckland.ac.nz/~wsun013/ ... guppy1.jpg http://www.ece.auckland.ac.nz/~wsun013/ ... guppy2.jpg

Spink
Have a look at the wasting thread, it's something like Hennaguya ( can't remember how to spell it) I have had a similar problem, but it only affects my fry and smaller fish, not my adults. Maybe try a treatment of tonic, or malachite green and see if there is any improvement. If not, there may only be one way to solve the problem, and it's not a pleasant one. I just had to euthanise 35 fish from an infected tank - it's heartbreaking, but sometimes it can be the only way to stop an infection. But PLEASE try a treatment regime first, maybe go to your local library and have a look at some fish books to see if there is anything that you can identify is the problem, and remedy it. Good Luck! bedazzled
I had 2 platies do that but not any guppies LFS said that maybe they had internal parasites or something. It was quite some time ago and I was even taking the fish out and feeding them on their own in a bowl so they could get plenty of food but they ate plenty and just got skinnier and skinnier and died
wsun013
hi, If it only happens to female ones, why are the only pictures of males? They are females. their anal fins are like fans not sticks. I have females with larger tails and back fins and their bodies are white. I just went to Hollywood fish farm in NorthShore, Auckland. I planned to uy the malechite green but they told me if this only happen to female gups, it is more to the water quality problem but not the parasite issue. They also said it happens to adult female after they gave birth and they are pretty weak and could be weaker due to the damage of internal organ caused by the acidic water. I am getting those thinner fish out first to make sure it is not parasite first. If i found more males then I might just go get the malachite green. Spink
I'd recommend doing all the regular water changes, and a little extra if you can manage it, maybe 2-3 smaller changes throughout the week. If you have a water test kit, try using that and check what the water parameters are, or if you don't have one, a lot of pet shops offer a service to do water test free of charge or for a small fee. I hope it goes well for you, it's a horrible thing having to kill a fish that seems perfectly healthy but you know will get sick, suffer and eventually die Let us know how you get on
cesarz
Hi, Did you have any snails in the tanks and/or did you feed them live daphnia at any time in their recent life? Cesarz

My tank is around 120L, and I change 10L daily since 2 weeks ago.
wsun013
Hi Cesarz, Hi, Did you have any snails in the tanks and/or did you feed them live daphnia at any time in their recent life? Cesarz I always feed them squashed pallets. However....there are heaps of snails hiding in java moss....they all come out at night...... Could the snails be the issue ? How do I get rid of all these snails without harm the fish ...?

cesarz
I always feed them squashed pallets. However....there are heaps of snails hiding in java moss....they all come out at night...... Could the snails be the issue ? How do I get rid of all these snails without harm the fish ...?I asked about the snails because I had this same experience with my guppies after i introduced a plant that had snails in it. it could be the snails. Get rid of them, dont know the safest way. Another thing that causes this is the hormones females secrete after giving birth which makes fish in the tank to not want to eat so nobody eats the fry for two days, sometimes this hormone lingers for days and the guppies just dont have appetite, although they eat a little. have a massive water change. Also squashed pellets are not ideal food as it is not digested quickly, use flakes or gel food.
