DantezGirl
hi all just wanted to ask all white albino axolotl owners to make them selfs known to each other and to come together and produce more white albino axolotls i have been on my hunt for one or two white albino axolotls since late last year and i thank those who have been messaging about sightings ect i have been told so and so has one and so and so has one ect these animals are not allowed to be brought into the country so once there gone there gone when all it would take is a few months together and they could boost the population ten fold in a year i hear this is the case for many species in nz just an opinion and observation not to offend any one cheers DG

mumzy50
Yes it is a shame to lose a breed of fish or any species once you have them in the country some times think its like a fashion statement blacks were in then albinos now its golds oxolot. Not every body is like that forturily. There are people who still want to preserve a species And good on you. DantezGirl
yp its not only white albino axolotls a lot of species will disappear from nz and as the laws get tougher it gets harder and harder then all of a sudden we have nothing and then for some the only way to see a particular species is on tv pictures or fly half way around the world when all it would take is a little communication and dedication to build up the numbers of reptiles amphibians and fish it'll be a sad day when that happens so if you happen to have a special species lurking in your tank/s or terrarium/s help the species survive in nz by participating in a breeding program so to speak or even start a breeding program
Dougstark
This issue covers a wide range of creatures. I keep fancy finches as well as lizards etc. Of the list of these birds that were available in New Zealand 15 years ago less than half of them are still in the country and more than half of those are on the verge of disappearing within the next five years and of course you cannot import any more. repto
same with ornamental pheasants, you get inbreeding and worse still cross breeding that mucks up the whole strain.Afew years back was impossible to get a pure lady amherst`s here. The Kaligy is all but gone now and those that are here are mostly infertile and interelated. livingart
once animals become "rare" to source they command a higher price being rich enough to buy something doesn't necessarily mean you have the nous to look after it Siamese firebacks and himalayan monals were expensive to purchase when imported, now both birds are in the impossible to source basket the amherst and goldens i have come from a 40 year old plus line, so have kept it predominately pure but i do have a few hybrids running loose

DantezGirl
welcome reptor i find most people on here willing to offer friendly helpful advice some even have a sense of humor hopefully by taking the first step into the light a mrs herman and many many other species will be found and a breeding program so to speak can begin and hopefully stop the hermans tortoise and many more animals from being another sad statistic and something we can only dream about in new zealand question: to save a species in new zealand especially one so hard to find would it be better to let the species go or heavily in breed to keep the species alive in new zealand? Dougstark
I have only been a member here for a few weeks myself but so far I have found that there are plenty of like minded people in this forum. But care should be taken because there are some unscrupulous ' 8) ' people around who would not hesitate in taking advantage of you and stealing your pet. An aqaintance of mine has recently had his aviary raided with many finches missing or left dead. The other thing we need to get over is being selfish by not making agreement to get rare species together. Do you know the sex of your tortoise and is there someone out there with a mate that we can get together to mutual benefit of owners and survival of species in NZ. Good luck

I have being talked to a few that are doing well and hopefully in the near future there will be more babies for the large market that are looking and believe me there are a few of us .
