driftwood tannins

Just wondering

if i pick up wood from the beach

wash it, soak it in water for 8 months

then it sinks

brush it with steel brush

remove soft wood

wash it again

are the tannins poisonous?

i mean this has been on a beach for who knows how long

apart from tannins, sap is long gone.

any ideas?

what could this do apart from increasing acidity?

The only potential contaminant from beach wood would be salt and that is so soluble that it will be gone just about straight away. The only real problem with the leachate including tanins is the colour (if you don't like it) and that will go also if you change the water.

I've never noticed any tannins from beach driftwood.

And the amount of salt you'll end up with, especially after a quick hosing off of any sand, is so little you'll only need to worry about it if you're the type of person that doesn't blow into the bag when transporting fish out of fear that the CO2 in your breath will change the PH too much and kill the fish.
