Guest
I didn't know where to put this so if it's not in the right spot can someone please move it. I just put some tonic salt in my tank after I was told that it would perk my fish up when my tank was goin g downhill. So I put some in and it's been great the fish are happier and all that black hairy algae that grows all over the tank that only siamese algae eaters can eat is dissapering and that green hairy algae is dissapearing. So if your tank isn't lookin to good put some tonic salt in it's gret stuff.
VinsonMassif
Yeah I found the same thing. But from what I have read Aquarium Salt is largely unregulated quality and may contain unknown additives. However it is usually just the same as table salt, just sold at a higher price. Guest
Yip it works on fresh water tanks. I've only tried it in a tropical tank so I'm not sure if it works in a cold water tanks or not but I'm sure it would. Has anyone used it a cold water tank?? Adrienne
Just be careful about adding salt to your tank - some fish etc won't tolerate it and if you do use it it needs to be at a regulated dose.
Guest
Yeah I researched all my fish before I put it in.

Simian
I have used this salt in both my cold and tropical tanks and have had no worries. dont really see the need for it thou if everything elce is in order I haven't used it yet but was considering it, apparently its all about enhancing the electrolytes etc, I also talked about it with a mate of mine who is a biologist, and hes was rabbiting on about better oxygen uptake due to water density...my eyes glazed over at that point. skaffen
How about in a planted tank? Will plants handle the change in salinity?
Caryl
I would expect any dosage to be so small as to have little effect on most plants.

If you are looking for a cheap substitute use ROCK SALT. Better still, do more water changes and you wont need it at all.
