broms2
Hi I'm looking at setting up my first reef tank and have a couple of bits that I was hoping to use. I have a 4'x2'x2' tank and a ts2000 queen skimmer, I know the skimmer is a cheap one but if I set it up in a sump with infusion ( I think that is what is called) will it do an alright job till I can get a better one. Any help would be appreciated
wasp
Yes, they work, however they are not as effective as some of the better skimmers. When I had a Queen, I added a wooden airstone, and that improved performance quite a bit, but was a hassle. But do use the skimmer, any skimmer is better than no skimmer. but longer term, a better skimmer will be a benefit to your tank.
reef
The skimmer will work but wont remove organic quick enough. Two most important equipment in reef keeping is skimmer & lighting. So i would not cut cost on these.
broms2
so what skimmer would suit a tank of this size and won't kill my wallet?
reef
so what skimmer would suit a tank of this size and won't kill my wallet? How many fish do you want to kill before you upgrade. Good skimmers are not cheap but in the long term it will pay for itself. Your tank is about 400L so it could cost you about $700 for a quality unit. Ira
Do you have a sump or need a HOB?

puttputt
I had a queen 2000 as well. Needs a big pump to drive it, and even then a very poor performer. It's better than nothing, so use it until you can get a better one. There are alot of cheap (ish) skimmers available nowadays, that are alot better than a queen. Also check for second hand ones that come up occasionally.

chimera
Two most important equipment in reef keeping is skimmer & lighting That would be first and third most important. Second most important is flow
Fmxmatt
If ur gunna start that arguement chim, then wouldn't the first most important piece of equipment be the tank?
chimera
If ur gunna start that arguement chim, then wouldn't the first most important piece of equipment be the tank? only if you want to call the tank "equipment"
