cichlid7
would this be good for lighting on a 150 x 60 x 60cm marine tank http://sog.open24x7.biz/catalog/product ... ad4655a275 thanks
davidb
600 Watts is a bit excessive isn't it... It won't be the right Kelvin and you will be hard pushed to find replacement bulbs. Also, over a 4ft tank you would be better getting 2x 250W lights- (this is assuming you want a SPS reef) as 2x lights will give you better spread. T5 will cost alot less to run, as will 2x 150W or 2x250W, and they will be cheaper to replace bulbs for also. So short answer, no, I wouldn't get it. cichlid7
ok so would 2 of these be good or are they not the right sort of lighting http://sog.open24x7.biz/catalog/product ... ad4655a275 im just trying to workout whether i should go with a tank with all corals and everything or a FOWLR tank. i know i have got a lot of reading to do. just working it out first then i will start reading. Warren
I think the first link for the SON lamps is no good as they are yellow/orange colour. They are extremely efficient however.
cichlid7
would i be able to start with a FO tank and then at a later date add some strong lighting and then corals
Warren
The second link is probably only good for freshwater plant growth at best... Ask them what the K is...
davidb
You don't need Metal Halides for a FO tank, its a waste of power. T8's will be fine.
davidb
You might as well get one with decent reflectors too... A hanging kit like Trademe Auction 137757263 is probably the neatest and best bang for your buck, and double end halide bulbs are generally cheaper than single end ones
davidb
I am running a couple of these on my reef at the moment, and they work well, even at 2ft water depth, provided you put SPS corals in the top 1/2... (Well I have one, awaiting the second-not from same seller) Auction number 137148305
reef
If you are going fish only i would get t5s. and latter on if you get corals add more t5s, you can keep all corals under t5s.
davidb
...but you won't get the glitter effects metal halides give you
reef
You don’t even notice the glitter on many tanks anyway, especially if you use t5s with halides, If you really want glitter lines all you need is an incandescent bulb on the tank and you will get glitter lines with t5s, Also note that if using blue metal halide bulbs you don’t get much glitter lines anyway, glitter lines are more noticeable if using low Kelvin bulbs t5s on a fish tank will also make the fish colour look much better. Metal halides tend to wash the colour of fish and corals.
camnbron
...but you won't get the glitter effects metal halides give you If you want some glitter lines, a cheap way is to buy a couple of the 12v LED strips from dick smith that Slapper posted about a few months ago. Not very noticable during the day but when they are on by themselves it looks pretty cool - just remeber to make up a reflector to mount them under to maximise their light. cichlid7
how many watts of light would i need for a FO tank would 120watts be enough or do i need more
reef
There is not set amount of watts for a fo tank, just put in what ever you need to light the tank up, If your tank is 150 cm then i would go 4 x 54w.
cichlid7
could i use T8s and do you need special tubes or are the cool daylight ones ok i have got a few of those 150cm 58watt per bulb
reef
t8s are fine, cool daylight is ok, but you should add also a blue tube otherwise the tank will look yellow. maybe 3 daylight and 1 blue/actinic tube
