reef
very much so xfactor, i did go over the top by saying great but your post is what i was getting at. A Hobbyist once told me for example what a great knowledge a certain person had and been in reef keeping for 20 years etc, when i heard who the guy was i laughed as his tanks looked like they where still in the 1960s, covered in algae, lost a lot of fish. and was using under gravel filters. even covered this in my post as a example. I used think my mates tanks was fantastic when i started and looking back it was crap, covered in algae and millions of pest anemoes
tangtastic
Sock Puppet account?? I really disagree that a great aquarium is just a matter of personal opinion. Your example, reef, was really well justified. But it is a matter of opinion. People look at my tank and rave about it. They think it is great. I look at it, see the patches of cyno, the algae on the glass and bits of aquascape that I am not happy with. Does that mean it isn't great? If a tank has algae and pests living in it, you really should strongly consider any advice taken from the owner. Most of the more important aspects of running a marine aquarium (water parameters and control) are a matter of FACT not opinion... And most experienced hobbyists know these FACTS. Just because a mechanic has a broken down car, doesn't mean he isn't a good mechanic.

fluz8r
Well.. folks.. this is my first post... given the great welcome you seem to give newbies on this site, I'm bracing myself for all sorts of accusations. After all, who would dare to disagree with an established reef(er)? I must confess, I have been known to rave about tangtastics tank. Was I horribly mistaken to do such a thing?? But then... I like Tangs If great tanks were not a matter of opinion, why would we have "Rate my tank" websites? Back on Topic I've been reading and researching Marine heavily for a while now, reading all I can. (apparently spending far too much time reading forums!) What have I discovered? Basically nothing surprising There are many ways to remove the skin from a feline, and you don't have to look far to find contradicting advice. Take all advice given with a grain of salt. (yes, I do laugh at my own corny jokes) My first Marine tank will be operational in its own time, and I'll use a wide variety of "advice" and follow what makes sense to my own brand of logic. Part of my personal challenge will be running a successful tank with my own blend of ideas, research, and common sense. If I wanted a tank to look at, I'm sure I could simply buy one and pay someone for the upkeep. I-LOVE-FISH, I'm up to about $1000 and my small tank still has no water in it yet This is far from expensive. And it will crash. But I'll learn, rebuild and live another day. I'd consider going the freshwater route first, but I'd be delaying starting what I really want to be doing! Will I spend $5000 on this tank? No ...But then I'm already planning Tank V2.0! Thought of the Day “The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.†
jeash007
I've found this website really beneficial because you experience different peoples point's of view. Ultimately you have to make your own decisions about your tank and it's up to you how much weight you apply to someone claiming to be an experienced reefer. I agree with Sapphire, I always try to look for information and balance it against what i have learnt from this website. Ultimately i think the more information you can gather the better, from experienced hobbyists down to someone just starting like me. Once you have all this information you can start making decisions based on what you want.

wasp
That is a couple of the most ignorant and arrogant comments I have ever heard on this forum. Should have been here a couple of years ago! BTW I'm not refering to any present company!
